VivaPen Delivery
Ivoclar Vivadent has provided a unique delivery
form for AdheSE One. The VivaPen comes with a
prebent, replaceable brush cannula, which the manufacturer
says allows for easy scrubbing. The rotatable
hub is intended for the best positioning of the
brush cannula. The manufacturer explains that the
VivaPen is activated by pressing the “click” mechanism
until the brush cannula is saturated with adhesive.
A single layer of adhesive is then applied to the
tooth surface and brushed into the dentin and enamel
for 30 seconds. According to the manufacturer,
this method of material delivery allows dentists to
dispense the exact amount of material needed.
When the dentist evaluators were asked to rate
the VivaPen compared with bottle or unit dosing,
67% rated it as excellent and 33% rated it as very
good. One evaluator said, “Love it! The brush that
comes on the pen is excellent as well and I have no
problem getting to those hard-to-reach places.”
Effectiveness
According to in vitro research conducted by
Ivoclar Vivadent, AdheSE One achieved equally high
shear bond strengths to enamel and dentin.1 Some of
the other adhesives compared in the study exhibited
lower bond strengths to enamel than to dentin. An in
vivo study of AdheSE One showed a 100% retention
rate at 6 months.1
Acknowledging that bond strength to dentin and
enamel cannot be thoroughly assessed in the short
term evaluation conducted by the
Dental Product Shopper evaluators, all
of the dentists who participated in this
evaluation rated the effectiveness of
AdheSE One as very good. As one evaluator
noted, “[It’s] too soon to tell,
[but] seems good so far.”
Dental Product Shopper will follow
up with these evaluators and let you
know in a future issue how these
patients are doing.
Postoperative Sensitivity
According to the manufacturer,
because of AdheSE One’s self-etching
properties, all areas of the dentin are demineralized
but they are not penetrated by
monomers. Ivoclar Vivadent says that this
efficient infiltration of the dentin significantly
reduces postoperative sensitivity.
Two of the evaluators rated this
product as excellent with regard to
postoperative sensitivity, 3 rated it as
very good, and 1 rated it as good. One
evaluator noted that he observed no
problems and another said he had nothing
significant to report.
Ease of Use
When the evaluators were asked to
rate AdheSE One on ease of use, 1 rated
it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good,
and 1 rated it as good. All of the evaluators
noted that the pen design for delivering
the material enhances the ease of
use of this product, but 2 noted that the
location of the button to dispense the
material is in a slightly awkward place.
Time Savings
According to Ivoclar Vivadent, the
water solvent and the integrated
nanofillers in AdheSE One ensure that a
homogenous layer of material is formed
when it is applied to the tooth surface.
This homogenous layer means that only
a single layer of material is needed.
The manufacturer says that the
combination of the single layer application
and the VivaPen delivery form lead
to time savings for the dentist. The evaluators
agree. Three evaluators rated
AdheSE One as excellent for time savings
and 3 rated it as very good. One
evaluator said, “I like that you don’t
have to dispense into wells and use
additional brushes.” Another evaluator
commented, “Very good…no more taking
a brush in and out of the mouth for
more adhesive. Love it.”
Overall Satisfaction
When the evaluators were asked to
give their overall satisfaction rating for
AdheSE One, 5 rated the product excellent
to very good and 1 rated it as good.
One evaluator said that he found the
product “very efficient. No more wasted
pools of adhesive left in a plastic dish.”
Another evaluator said, “I just love the
pen design and the ‘click’ feature. More
adhesive instantly. Awesome!”
