When I ask my peers about their biggest practice frustrations, one of the top responses is their computer network. Because most offi ces now use computers to manage data, it is critical to keep the physical system up to speed and the software current. This can be a very expensive investment.

When I ask my peers about their biggest practice frustrations, one of the top responses is their computer network. Because most offi ces now use computers to manage data, it is critical to keep the physical system up to speed and the software current. This can be a very expensive investment.

The Problem

When things go wrong, it could be a server going down with no access to data, or it could be a fl ood and the loss of all data, including the backup that was kept in my fi reproof offi ce safe. There are many ways my system can be compromised. I have a large network in my offi ce, and I have had to upgrade the hardware and software many times over the years. With the cost of hardware and monthly maintenance fees, as well as a computer specialist to install and update programs, it has become a major source of frustration for both my staff and me.

The Dream

What if there was a solution that would allow me to relax? What would it look like? What would it be like to store all of my data in a secure offsite location (think banking-level security)? What if all of the backups and software updates could be done automatically? Would I constantly need to update my computer hardware?

Think about it: I wouldn?t need a network server in my offi ce. If the power went down, I wouldn?t need a large battery backup because all data would be stored offsite immediately after input. It would save me the time of installing new programs to keep up with software updates. It would save me the cost of constantly upgrading my computers and server. It would eliminate having different workstation confi gurations as I change a defective or old computer. And it would save me the frustration of having a server go down and not being able to access or input data because I could access it from a mobile device. All backups would be saved in a secure offsite environment with redundant locations. All I would need is a workstation with an Internet connection, and I would be free from the woes that currently plague most of us.
