Digital Restorative Dentistry and the Lab
?Even if you don?t do chairside digital dentistry, you are most likely involved in CAD/CAM technology because your lab probably uses it,? Dr. Michael DiTolla told Midwestern dentists at the recent Advances in Digital Dentistry event in Plymouth, Mich.
DETROIT??Even if you don?t do chairside digital dentistry, you are most likely involved in CAD/CAM technology because your lab probably uses it,? Dr. Michael DiTolla told Midwestern dentists at the recent Advances in Digital Dentistry event in Plymouth, Mich. Dr. DiTolla offers a unique perspective because, as Director of Clinical Research and Education, he maintains a practice within Glidewell Laboratories. While he captures almost all of his impressions digitally, he also gets to view thousands of preps and impressions.
Dr. DiTolla also may be the only dentists who owns all of the commercially available digital impression systems and used his unique perspective to compare and contrast the features, benefits, and limitations of the major systems. His take-away: with currently available technology, powdering the teeth produces the most accurate scans easily and quickly.
Dr. DiTolla showed a chart showing the meteoric rise in the number digital scans that Glidewell receives. ?Three years ago we were receiving about 250 digital impressions per month, and in June 2012 we received 2,040 digital impressions,? he pointed out. ?The number of digital impressions we receive to continues to grow monthly, and about 85% of the restorations made from those digital impressions are model-less crowns made through CEREC Connect (now called Sirona Connect). The other 15% are bridges through Sirona Connect (we still use models for those) or Cadent/Lava COS digital impressions, which still require fabrication of a model.?
?Actually, the growth in digital impressions is occurring along with a growth in conventional impressions. The whole market continues to grow for us as the economy rebounds,? Dr. DiTolla added as he humorously shared some of the abominable impressions that Glidewell gets on a regular basis.
Dr. DiTolla?s high-energy and sometimes hilarious presentation was the perfect closer for both sessions at the end of a long, productive day.
