I?ve been practicing dentistry for more than 25 years and I?ve encountered a lot of technology. However, the Lava Chairside Oral Scanner C.O.S. from 3M ESPE is one of the products that has truly made me a better dentist.

Instant Feedback

The beauty of this system is the continuous 3D video image-capturing, which provides instantaneous scanning feedback. This is unique to the Lava C.O.S. In many clinical situations, live feedback may not be a huge issue, but how many times do you ask yourself, ?Did I prepare that margin correctly,? ?Did the tissue get in the way,? or ?Did the bleeding interfere with the impression?? With the Lava C.O.S., you can evaluate your preparation and retraction at a magnification 20 times greater than what the eye can see on a traditional impression. This is what makes you a better dentist.

Reduced Errors

Tearing, pulling, voids, and bubbles with traditional impressions are a real issue, even among the best and most detailed professionals. We all know these issues add to daily stress. Studies have shown that up to 89% of our impressions have errors, and many labs agree that traditional impressions have limitations.

As in traditional impressions, the Lava C.O.S. does not dictate which materials you have to use. You can scan all of your crown and bridge preparations, inlays, onlays, veneers, bridges, and?though I haven?t done so?seated implant abutments. If you want to do a PFM, an E-MAX, Captek, or gold restoration, it?s up to you and the clinical situation. The difference is a procedure that is fun versus ?same old.? In essence, this doesn?t change your lab as your partner, but actually gives the lab consistent quality, which means faster seating and delivery appointments.

The digital process eliminates trying to find a margin, or getting a call from the lab that there wasn?t enough occlusal reduction. With 20 times magnification, you see your margins, and once you capture the bite you can rotate the images and see your clearance. This equates to more efficiency in your chair both at the preparation/impression appointment and at the cementation appointment.

Impress Your Patients

There are additional benefits that my staff and patients love about this technology. My staff likes taking impressions with a digital system. It?s fun for them, almost like they?re playing a video game at work. You actually can watch how long your scans take and yes, we compete for better times without compromising quality. After every scan, we give the patients 3D glasses and they are wowed. This creates a better understanding of the process along with instilling a better ?value? of the quality of the restoration. Word of mouth has led to new patients.

The future of digital impressioning is here. With routine software updates, the system continues to improve, making scanning easier and easier. Dentistry is a very demanding profession, what?s wrong with a little fun during your day?
