Onpharma's Onset: Save Time, Stay on Schedule
I have been using an anesthetic buffering product called Onset (Onpharma) for the last year and I find that my anesthetic works in 2 minutes or less, even in blocks. It?s easy for me to stay with the patient from the time I sit down until I complete the procedure.
Dentists may be second only to air-traffic controllers at managing multiple, time-critical, and overlapping tasks. Our attention is often needed simultaneously in 2 operatories and the hygiene room. And at any given time during the day we have to complete post-treatment follow-ups, address emails, faxes, and text messages, and handle office administration matters.
The Productivity Challenge
To a greater degree than most healthcare professionals, dentists must keep multiple balls in the air throughout the practice day, and most of us get pretty good at it. But our mastery of ?parallel tasking? does not come without a cost. As time and motion experts will tell us, parallel tasking is 30% less productive than handling the same tasks in serial, or 1 by 1. An industrial engineer watching our practice flow would quickly notice that during most of our procedures, we deliver anesthetic and then excuse ourselves from the operatory for anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to do something else. We would of course explain that this routine prevents us from losing 5 to 15 minutes of productivity during every appointment. But if you asked someone to design a routine that would make your workflow less hectic and more productive, the first question would be, ?What if you could stay with your patient?? It?s possible.
Numb in a flash
I have been using an anesthetic buffering product called Onset for the last year and I find that my anesthetic works in 2 minutes or less, even in blocks. It?s easy for me to stay with the patient from the time I sit down until I complete the procedure. I am quite surprised to see how much more quickly I finish now that I don?t leave to address other tasks in the middle of each appointment. The tasks that I used to handle while the patient was getting numb, I now handle after I have said goodbye to the patient, which is a revolution in the practice. First, as it turns out, I am easily 30% more efficient at completing my procedures when I don?t leave in the middle of them. I am getting back 10 to 15 minutes per appointment using Onpharma?s Onset. I haven?t changed my schedule at all, but with the extra time at the end of the appointments, my practice day seems less rushed. Second, we have more flexibility to handle patients who arrive late for their appointments, deal with emergencies, or make adjustments that keep us on schedule. In fact, we rarely get behind schedule now, which has been the biggest bonus of all.
Ease of Use, Ease Discomfort
Onset is dispensed from an easy-to-use mixing pen that lets me readily select the precise amount of buffering solution I need. The reusable pen automatically mixes the 2 components?sodium bicarbonate and the neutralizing solution. And another happy benefit?less injection pain and more profound anesthesia. Patients love it. There is nothing that has come along in quite a while with the potential to make the difference in your practice day the way Onset does.
