Tobacco cessation and tobacco-use cessation counseling are important in the prevention of both oral and systemic diseases. The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine recently added the Tobacco Cessation Counseling Protocol (TCCP) to the predoctoral curriculum, in which students are trained to provide this service to patients. The purpose of this study was 3-fold: to evaluate the opinions of students regarding the new TCCP, to identify barriers for successful implementation of the program, and to explore ways to improve effectiveness of the TCCP from the perspective of dental medicine.
