Simplifying Overdentures in Today?s Economy
CINCINNATI, April 12, 2013 ? A full-mouth reconstruction can be out of financial reach for many patients. ?If you tell your patient $75,000, they?re going to walk out the door,? said Ara Nazarian, DDS, at Dental Learning?s Updates in Contemporary Dentistry meeting. Dr. Nazarian?s lecture focused on how dentists can turn to overdentures on implants as an affordable option for edentulous patients?especially in today?s economy. The talk demonstrated how clinicians could implement overdentures into their practice, place and restore small diameter implants, and satisfy the patient?s esthetic and functional needs.
A Growing Market
Statistics show that 26% of seniors over the age of 65 will lose all of their natural teeth. However, only one-half of 1% has received implant therapy. In 2010, 42,094 mini implant overdentures were placed, with an estimated growth of 159% by 2017. These numbers indicate a clear path for growth in the dental practice through placing implant overdentures. Typically, the treatment plan for these edentulous patients would be bone grafting and standard diameter implants, which requires a long process with additional surgeries and expense. For these reasons, patients often decline dental implant treatment.
The Advantages of Small Diameter Implants
?Using small diameter implants, you can perform an invaluable service for a growing group of patients.? Dr. Nazarian addressed some of the key benefits that come with using small diameter implants:
- Anesthesia via local infiltration
- No surgical flap required
- No huge osteotomy site created
- Only one-two drills required
- Unique self-tapping design
- Immediate fixation = immediate loading
Dr. Nazarian concluded his lecture with the following pearl, ?There are three types of people: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. The most successful people are in the first category!?
In a separate interview, Dr. Nazarian said that he employs the LOCATOR Overdenture Implant (LODI) System from Zest Anchors because it is ideal for fully or partially edentulous patients with severe resorption and very narrow ridges. With LODI, Nazarian said, there is a cost-effect alternative with the advantages of the LOCATOR self-aligning abutment. In the same interview, Dr. Nazarian also noted some products that help him get the best results for his patients. He recommended using Quick Up by VOCO for the pickup of a palate-free denture. He also uses a Virtual Treatment Plan by 3D Diagnostix, noting, ?I?ve virtually done the surgery before I touch the patient. That?s the beauty of technology.? Dr. Nazarian also espoused the AEU-7000 implant motor from Aseptico, as well as Physics Forceps from Golden Dental Solutions for easy and successful extraction.
