Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill Less Chairtime, Better Restorations

I regularly get questions from dentists about bulk-fill restorative techniques and materials. There?s a reason for much of the negative ?buzz? about bulk-filling. Years ago, we heard that conventional composites could be used for bulk filling and the results were less than successful. So when composites were developed and introduced specifically for bulk-fill techniques, it drew attention. Earlier this year, when Ivoclar Vivadent launched the Bulk Fill version of its Tetric EvoCeram composite, I had to try it.

Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill, and the bulk-fill technique, offers a range of benefits for any general dental practice. The most talked about advantage is obviously speed?being able to place the bulk of the material at one time instead of in increments. And while this time-savings is seen mainly in terms of productivity and getting the patient out faster, I see another very important consideration.

We all know isolation is a key factor in adhesive dentistry. Well, the bulkfill technique and shortened curing time translates into less time that you need to keep the tooth isolated. The shorter the isolation time required, the less risk of moisture contamination. So the time savings does not sacrifice clinical outcomes? in fact, you could be improving your restorations.

The Right Light

Incidentally, when using Ivoclar Vivadent?s bluephase style LED curing light, curing time for a 4-mm deep Tetric Evo- Ceram Bulk Fill restoration is 10 seconds. Furthermore, with the bluephase 20i? with a 2000 mW/cm2 light intensity? curing can be completed in 5 seconds. With a conventional halogen light that is producing 500 mW/cm2, it takes 20 seconds to cure a 4 mm depth of Tetric Evo- Ceram Bulk Fill. The difference in curing times is a function not of the wavelength but of the light intensity.

Ease of Handling

The handling properties of Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill are what you?d expect from a posterior composite. I like its smooth consistency and adaptability, and it?s not sticky. I also can sculpt it easily, even in operatory lighting. Ivoclar has a bifurcated contact point instrument, the OptraContact, that works great with Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill in large cavities where creating proper contacts is difficult.

Improved Esthetics, Less Shrinkage

The esthetics of most bulk fill composites is universally acknowledged to be average at best. This is because they are formulated with more translucency than conventional composites to allow more depth of cure. Ivoclar Vivadent has incorporated a polymerization booster into the initiator system of Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill, ensuring a complete cure at 4 mm without having to increase translucency, making the material so much more esthetic. I?ve found the 3 available shades more than sufficient, and because Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill is designed for the posterior, it should not be an issue.

Another great benefit is the low volumetric shrinkage, and that along with the fast procedure, good esthetics, and easy handling makes Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill a must-try material.
