DHA omega-3 is available as a supplement and can be added to a diet, though it would be best to consult a doctor before adding it to a regiment.
The Harvard study involved 55 adults who have all experienced ?moderate periodontitis.? Some of the study participants received 2,000 mg per day of DHA omega-3 while others received a placebo pill. The testing lasted 3 months.
?Results showed that, for the 46 adults who completed the trial, DHA levels in red blood cell membranes increased between 3.6% to 6.2%, whereas no such increases were observed in the placebo group. In addition to the improvements in pocket depth and gingival index, the researchers reported that the levels of the inflammatory biomarkers C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta) decreased significantly in the DHA group.?
