Product Views from Dental School

Basic science and boards are still what you'd imagine. The clinical advancements at Penn have been greatly appreciated: digital radiography using Schick sensors, electronic records with Dentrix, and recently a 3M ESPE's Lava COS has been used by students in fabricating CAD/CAM restorations. The Lava COS is really quick and much easier than the final impression protocol. Most students at the school work with LED lights, like the LeaderLight, choosing to avoid the somewhat antiquated overhead light during restorative procedures. A challenge at the school is infection control and a product in use there is the LeaderBoard disinfectable keyboard and mouse which eliminate the need for barrier tape and bags and make setup and breakdown quicker, cleaner, and more efficient.

I had the opportunity to try a few new products at the Greater New York Dental Meeting recently. BISCO's DUO-LINK Universal cement was pretty easy to use and clean up and CareCredit's booth (which drew me in with the promise of a Pillow Pet) was informative because that's the patient financing option in use at Penn.

As a former web developer with Dental Product Shopper and builder of quite a few dental websites, I found it interesting that the "good deals" at the Greater NY show for a website and hosting were $69 to $200 per month. You might not know it, but it's no secret that web hosting costs $2.49 to $4.99 per month. Check out sites like,, or and look at their prices for web hosting.
