Q&A: Clinician transitions into working with dental companies and publications

A: This transition started in 2007 when I attended an MDI (mini dental implant) seminar. I was so impressed with the product, the instructor Dr. Allan Fuhr, and how the seminar was organized. I wanted to become a lecturer for this company. After 3 years of using the product, taking clinical photos, talking to the company about becoming a lecturer for them, and a corporate leadership change, I was selected to join 3M ESPE MDI Division. My involvement with 3M ESPE has created other opportunities to work with other companies and publications that have an emphasis on dentistry.

Q: Why did you choose to make this transition?

A: For me, I enjoy doing dentistry. My staff and patients know this about me. However, dentistry is a very physically and mentally demanding profession. Like other similar professions, the older you get, the more experience you gain to perform more efficiently. The other side of this equation is that it is harder to keep up with the physical toll your body goes through over the years of delivering the goods (dentistry). After suffering from back pain every now and then, I realized that I could not do dentistry at this pace (working 8 hours, 5-6 days a week) for the rest of my life. Lecturing and writing dental articles is my way of working efficiently and decreasing the physical demands of the daily grind of private practice.

Q: Are you enjoying the process of transitioning into work with dental companies and publications?

A: I like the direction the process of transitioning is going. Working on projects with companies and publications takes time to develop. And when the projects do come together, and I can lecture or write, those become happy times for me.

Q: Have you found anything about the process challenging?

A: The process is occurring at a pace that I can?t control. I?m used to getting things done in a private dental office manner: an emergency patient comes to the office, there is a bad tooth that needs to be removed, patient OKs the procedure, I take out the bad tooth. With the transition process, it?s hard for an unknown person with no contacts to approach a company/publication and expect them to OK what you want to do and work with you. Hopefully, over time I?ll become more of a known person with contacts, and this part of the process will become less of a challenge.

Richard Lipscomb Jr., DDS, has been in practice for 15 years. He is the owner of Woodmore Dental Center in Mitchellville, MD, a private dental practice established in 2001. This modern office offers Invisalign, sleep appliances, and implants as its specialty services, along with routine dental services. Dr. Lipscomb is a graduate of Mercyhurst College and Howard University College of Dentistry. He also completed a 2-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Lipscomb gives presentations on mini dental implants (both basic and advanced) in cities throughout the country. He also presents mini dental implant and case presentation lectures to faculty and students at Howard University College of Dentistry.
