The Dental Geek: Not many dentists make the transition into the business of creating and selling products. What had inspired you to enter the business side of the dental world?

Dr. Scheier: I was inspired by my frustrations in seeing my patients having difficulty cleaning their teeth, especially at and below the gum line, which can lead to periodontal disease.

The Dental Geek: What makes the EVOLVE Toothbrush different from other toothbrushes?

Dr. Scheier: It is a manual toothbrush with moving parts. Its patented triple-flexing action makes it effortless to clean multiple surfaces of the teeth, simultaneously, especially at and below the gum line. The center and outer bristles are embedded in an elastic membrane. This enables the outer bristles to flex in and grab the tooth at the gum line, when gentle pressure of the head is applied to teeth. Because of this unique design, users can clean multiple surfaces of their teeth and gums at the same time, with minimal effort.

The Dental Geek: How did you come up with the brand name?

Dr. Scheier: By using the EVOLVE Toothbrush to clean their teeth and gums, consumer thinking would ?EVOLVE? from the old fashioned technology of toothbrushes that I call ?bristles on a stick? to my new, innovative triple-flexing technology.

The Dental Geek:  How did you come up with the design of the EVOLVE Toothbrush?

Dr. Scheier: The design inspiration actually came about when my wife was playing with my beautiful St. Bernard, Bridget. She had a toy ball that was covered with fingerlike projections. When Bridget bit down on the ball, the projections bent in to grab her teeth. The idea for EVOLVE?s flexing technology was born.

The Dental Geek: How can the EVOLVE Toothbrush help transform a patient?s oral health routine?

Dr. Scheier: It has been medically recognized that there is a link between gum disease and systemic diseases and conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, complications in pregnancy and even some forms of cancer. Because the EVOLVE Toothbrush makes it effortless and more precise to clean the teeth and gums, patients will improve their oral as well as overall health and well-being. It helps make brushing teeth and gums a no brainer of sorts ? ?the EVOLVE Toothbrush is a smart brush that knows exactly what to do even if you don?t.?

The Dental Geek: There are many risks associated with launching a new product. What challenges did you face when developing the EVOLVE Toothbrush?

Dr. Scheier: Beside the challenges of establishing strong patents and trademarks, the most difficult challenge to developing the EVOLVE Toothbrush was designing and testing many iterations of the brush until the right one was developed.

The Dental Geek: Do you envision the EVOLVE Toothbrush as a toothbrush that could be provided in bulk to dental practices for patient visits?

Dr. Scheier: I envision the EVOLVE Toothbrush as a product for both dental office distribution and direct consumer purchasing. If dentists truly realize the benefits EVOLVE can provide to their patients, EVOLVE would be a great product to distribute in their practices.

The Dental Geek: Do you plan on exhibiting the EVOLVE Toothbrush at any upcoming dental conventions?

Dr. Scheier: At this time I have no plans to exhibit the EVOLVE Toothbrush at conventions. Future exhibitions are anticipated.

The Dental Geek:Where can individuals go to buy the EVOLVE Toothbrush?

Dr. Scheier: We are about to launch an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to secure capital to build the production molds for the EVOLVE Toothbrush. Individuals can pre-purchase the toothbrush at a discounted price, plus free extras, for delivery in the late fall. Please visit our Indiegogo campaign site. After that, the EVOLVE Toothbrush will be available for purchase online and hopefully in selected specialty stores. A $1 donation will be given to the Maywood, New Jersey Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Chapter for each brush purchased.
