Start the Infection Control Conversation With Your Patients

Wouldn't it be great to become proactive for your patients and initiate a conversation about what you and your team do to protect their health? Here are some ideas:

If you have a blog, website, e-mail blast for patients, or a fan page, share a few facts regarding infection control in your practice. I'm not saying fire hose them with this enticing information; make it enlightening. Take one subject at a time and write about it, or better yet do a video blog for each! This is a great opportunity to engage and interact with your patients!

Inform your patients about how your office tackles infection control. In our practice, our team practices 5 infection control steps:

  1. Barrier protection, gloves, masks, eyewear, surfaces
  2. Surface disinfection
  3. Instrumentdisinfection and sterilization
  4. Sterilization frequency and monitoring
  5. Disposal of sharps

Be proud of your legal scope of practice no matter what position you hold in the practice. Your patients deserve to know if IV sedation or anesthetic can legally be administrated by anyone else other than the dentist. Even if you are a trained on the job professional, you are responsible for sharing all information of what you are legally and professionally able to provide each patient. Display your license and additional credentials for others to see. If you earned it and provide the service ethically within it, then show it!

Our patients deserve to know the standards set by CDC and ADA to protect their health and ours. Come from the mindset that we get to continuously nurture relationships while delivering optimum care. Infection control goes beyond the smile!
