Bond-1 SF SE

Solvent-Free, Self-Etch Adhesive

Bond-1 solvent-free, self-etch adhesive combines superior bond strength with reduced sensitivity.

Pentron’s new Bond-1 SF SE is free of the solvents found in virtually all other adhesives but still produces the high bond strength obtained with conventional agents. According to the manufacturer, the light-cured, self-etch adhesive forms an interactive bond between its resins and the minerals of the tooth structure, providing a superior bond to both dentin and enamel without the use of acetone, water, or alcohol.

The easy-to-use, 1-coat adhesive is available in both a single-dose and syringe delivery system. Bond-1 SF is indicated for all direct composite bonding and also can be used with dual-cure materials when the initial layer of such materials is light-cured.

Lack of Sensitivity

The manufacturer states that because Bond-1 SF is solvent-free, it protects against sensitivity while also preventing evaporation and eliminating underand overdrying. When the 12 dentists who evaluated Bond-1 SF were asked about lack of patient sensitivity, 6 rated it as excellent and 6 rated it as very good. Comments included “no complaints when patients were asked,” “no reported sensitivity at all,” and “not a single complaint.” A dentist who said it “worked great” added, “We did a lower quad of MODs with no sensitivity issues at all.”

Ease of Use (Delivery System and Handling)

According to the manufacturer, Bond-1 SF’s freestanding, single-dose formulation provides the ultimate in infection control. Syringe delivery is accomplished with flocked needle tips designed to facilitate direct placement into the preparation. Six dentists rated ease of use as excellent and 6 rated it as very good to good. The delivery system was rated as excellent by 8 evaluators and as very good to good by 4.

One evaluator described ease of use as “the same as other [adhesives]” and another evaluator “didn’t like having to continue rubbing the preparation for 20 seconds…especially when treating multiple teeth at the same time.” A dentist who said Bond-1 SF was “very easy to use but goes on thick” also “liked the single-dose delivery.” One dentist “loved the delivery system” and another said the tips “make it hard to apply on small preparations and sometimes make it hard to see if the adhesive is coming out.”

Pentron notes that unique handling properties enable an even spread of Bond-1 SF, ensuring complete coverage. Handling was rated as excellent by 4 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as good by 4. One evaluator said it “goes on a bit thick and puddles” and another said it was “thick and leaves a good deal of flash.” The dentist who “liked the thick viscosity for bonding to dentin before final impressions for veneers or indirect ceramic restorations” also said it “sometimes seemed thick for small fillings.” Another dentist said it was “sometimes difficult to control the exact amount needed to dispense on the tooth.” An evaluator who described handling as “very fast, very efficient” added that it was “hard to control how much is applied. I was afraid of adhesive pooling in the corners.”

Bond Strength

Bond strength was rated as excellent by 5 dentists, as very good by 6, and as good by 1.

One evaluator reported a “very strong bond,” another said it “seems to bond, but not as well as my current material,” and a third evaluator said it “seemed to work well with build-up materials and composites.” When asked about curing time, 8 evaluators rated it as excellent and 4 rated it as very good. One dentist called it “very quick and easy.”

Overall Satisfaction

Overall satisfaction with Bond-1 SF was rated as excellent by 1 evaluator, as very good by 8, and as good by 3. Ten evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend it to colleagues (1 wasn’t sure). One dentist who used syringe delivery said, “The brush tip makes placement extremely easy and precise.”
