Bond Boost SE

Self-etching Bond Boost SE™ dramatically improves bond strength to dual- and chemical-cure composites.  Now, adhesion of core build-ups is predictable and the technique is simplified.  There is no need for acid-etching or bond activator.  The operator simply applies Bond Boost, then applies the bonding agent and light-cures.

Using Bond Boost SE with an existing bonding agent improves core adhesion and eliminates the need for acid etching and use of a bond activator.

Premier Dental has introduced Bond Boost SE self-etching bond enhancer to improve bond strength to dual- and chemical-cure composites. According to the company, Bond Boost SE improves core adhesion up to 160% by using multiple performance-enhancing additives to create a synergistic effect with the bonding agent.

In a study presented at the 2006 International Association of Dental Research, Zalsman and colleagues evaluated the bond strength of dual-cured composite core build-up materials to several dentin bonding agents with their self-cured activators and an experimental self-etching bond enhancer (Bond Boost SE). They found that when core build-up material was bonded to unetched bovine teeth that were pretreated with Bond Boost SE, the shear bond strength was significantly higher than the same materials bonded with a self-cured activator to etched dentin1.

Time Savings, Less Sensitivity
Bond Boost SE acts as a 6th generation self-etching primer with additional performance additives and adhesive promoters for bonding agents, eliminating Using Bond Boost SE with an existing bonding agent improves core adhesion and eliminates the need for acid etching and use of a bond activator. Removing the acid-etch step not only saves time and money, it eliminates a major cause of postoperative sensitivity. Three of 4 dentists who evaluated Bond Boost SE agreed that it provided decreased postoperative sensitivity. However, a fourth dentist felt that etch and bond systems provide better postoperative sensitivity. “I do not believe selfetch bonding agents have improved ‘bonding’ in general. More steps, less bond strength, same—not less—cost; postoperative sensitivity is similar or worse,” he stated.
This evaluator also rated Bond Boost SE as only “fair” on time savings because “a poor enamel bond resulted, ultimately requiring an etching step. It took longer to etch the enamel and apply 2 bonding agents,” this evaluator noted. However, 3 of 4 dentist reviewers rated Bond Boost’s ease of use and time savings very highly.

How Bond Boost Works with Bonding Agents
Depending on the type of bonding agent used, Bond Boost SE works differently.

  • 4th-generation bonding agents: Bond Boost SE replaces the activator, primer, and acid etch (phosphoric acid) steps
  • 5th-generation bonding agents: Bond Boost SE replaces the activator and acid etch (phosphoric acid) steps
  • 6th-generation bonding agents: Bond Boost SE is an upgrade to the self-etching primer

Instructions
To use Bond Boost SE, brush it on 3 times, wait 20 seconds, and then blow dry. A bonding agent is then used as directed. Once applied, Bond Boost SE quickly dissolves the smear layer, and its hydrophilic element allows deep penetration of the dentin.
Enclosed instructions and packaging were rated highly by all testers. Two dentists noted that a unit-dose packaging would be welcome. “Counter stability might be improved,” one explained.

The Final Word
All of the dentist evaluators who tested Bond Boost SE use a self-etching primer at least once a week. They were asked to evaluate ease of use, time savings, effectiveness, packaging, instructions, postoperative sensitivity, and price. Three of the 4 dentists gave Bond Boost SE excellent to good ratings in all of these categories. When asked about ease of use, one dentist commented that the product has “good film thickness” and that it is an “easy system.”
