CAESY 9 DVD optimizes patient education with more than 270 full-motion, full-color 3D presentations.
The need for more and better patient education in the dental field has been well documented. 1,2 Patterson Dental’s CAESY 9 DVD is a comprehensive patient-education software program that explains diagnoses, procedures, treatment alternatives, and postoperative instructions in more than 270 multimedia presentations. The clearly narrated (English and Spanish) presentations feature full-motion video, full-color graphics, and 3D animation in widescreen format. The newest CAESY 9 DVD features 7 new and 29 updated presentations, as well as new 3D animations.
Presentation Quality
Of the 8 dentists and 5 hygienists who evaluated CAESY, 7 rated presentation quality as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good to fair. One dentist said, “Each topic was very professional and detailed.” The hygienist who reported “lots of redundancy in, for example, the explanation of crown options” also “loved the visuals!” She said, “Every patient who decides on extraction should see the picture of what happens when a tooth is extracted!”
Two dentists who would probably purchase the system reported “thorough and detailed explanations” and “well-presented presentations explaining dental disease.” A hygienist who called it much better than similar systems said: “I liked the detailed content and quality of the presentations and pictures. Some other products are too animated. These [eg, smokeless tobacco] were graphic but caught [patients’] attention.”
Ease of Use
CAESY optimizes staff time by eliminating the need to repeat explanations. Topic image galleries, presentation links, and 30-minute presentation loops enhance ease of use.
Ease of use was rated as excellent by 5 evaluators, as very good by 6, and as good by 2. Suggested improvements included “closed captioning in Spanish,” and “a quicker interface to quickly take you directly to videos.” Five evaluators identifi ed ease of use as a favorite feature; 1 said “the menu made it easy to fi nd topics…very user-friendly,” and another called CAESY “easy for me and my patients…very good product.”
Patient Benefits
CAESY uses clear language and dynamic 3D animation to explain the need for treatment, what it entails, treatment options, consequences of delaying treatment, and home care. CAESY enables truly informed decision-making with a broad range of the most-requested topics, from hygiene and periodontal disease to esthetic and restorative dentistry.
Range of presentation topics was rated as excellent by 9 evaluators and as very good to good by 4. One dentist described the number of topics covered as “extensive,” noting the inclusion of neuromuscular dentistry.
Value to patients was rated as excellent by 6 evaluators, as very good by 3, and as good by 4. A hygienist who rated the system as excellent “liked the alternative treatment sections, detailing the consequences of suboptimal or no treatment.” An evaluator who rated all features as excellent said: “Patients like it. It uses language they understand.” One evaluator said CAESY “enhanced/ prompted conversations about questions patients wouldn’t have otherwise asked… very informative.” Another reported that “no patient ever failed to understand the topic, and rarely even had questions after viewing it.” An Arizona dentist said, “It made the process clearer to patients than my verbal explanations.”
Ability to increase case acceptance was rated as excellent by 2 evaluators, as very good by 8, and as good to fair by 3. “Acceptance of periodontal treatment is greater when patients watch CAESY,” said a North Carolina hygienist.
Overall Satisfaction
Overall satisfaction with CAESY was rated as excellent by 5 evaluators, as very good by 7, and as good by 1. All 13 evaluators would definitely or probably recommend the system; 5 cited cost as a reason not to purchase it. A hygienist who also uses CAESY for teaching students said, “More offices need to be aware of the product and schedule time to use it with patients.”
