Product Review
Twelve dentists participated in the evaluation of GCEM
Automix. They evaluated the product on such
things as ease of extruding the material through the
Automix syringe, uniformity of mix, and viscosity.
Extruding Material
To use G-CEM Automix, apply the automix tip
to the syringe, dispense the desired amount directly
into the restoration, seat the restoration, and tack
cure for 2 to 6 seconds.
When the evaluators were asked to rate G-CEM
Automix on ease of extruding the material through
the syringe, 7 rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very
good, and 1 rated it as good. One evaluator
described it as a “very smooth flow, but not too fast
that there is waste or excess.”
Uniformity of Mix
GC America says that G-CEM Automix provides
a consistent mixing ratio every time. The evaluators
rated the product on its uniformity of mix. Six evaluators
rated it as excellent, 5 rated it as very good,
and 1 rated it as good. One evaluator said, “Very
uniform, no bleeding between uses
needed.” Another commented, “Good
quality control.”
Viscosity
The 12 evaluators were asked to
rate the viscosity of G-CEM Automix.
Seven evaluators rated it as excellent, 3
rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as
good. One evaluator said, “Good viscosity,
it flows into the preparation and
post space but isn’t runny or dripping
off the tooth.”
Retention
The evaluators were asked to rate GCEM
Automix on retention of restorations.
However, because of the shortterm
nature of the evaluation, many of
the evaluators were unable to answer
that question. Because of the lack of
response, retention was not included in
the scoring of the product review. Of the
evaluators who commented on retention,
one said, “None have fallen out,
but it’s too early to tell.” Another said,
“Assuming it is good.”
Working and Setting Times
All of the evaluators said that working
and setting times are important to
them when choosing a self-adhesive resin
cement. When they were then asked to
rate the working time of G-CEM
Automix, 7 rated it as excellent, 4 rated
it as very good, and 1 rated it as good.
With regard to setting time, 5 rated GCEM
Automix as excellent, 4 rated it as
very good, and 3 rated it as good. One
evaluator described the material’s working
time as “adequate…no problem seating
crowns due to setting.” With regard
to setting time, this same evaluator said,
“Good. No problems with crowns falling
out.” Another evaluator found the setting
time to be “too slow.”
Ease of Removing Excess
According to the manufacturer,
excess G-CEM material can be removed
with a scaler tip, after which it is given
a final light cure. When the evaluators
were asked to rate the ease of excess
removal of G-CEM Automix, 7 rated it
as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and
1 rated it as fair. One evaluator said,
“Great gel stage to remove excess, No
problems removing from contact.”
Overall Satisfaction
Eight evaluators said they would definitely
or probably recommend G-CEM
Automix to their colleagues. The same
number of evaluators said they would
definitely or probably purchase the
material in the future. When asked to
give their overall satisfaction rating of
G-CEM Automix self-adhesive resin
cement, 3 rated it as excellent, 4 rated it
as very good, and 5 rated it as good. One
evaluator said of the ease of extruding
the cement through the syringe,
“Incredibly easy, couldn’t be better.”
