The unique gel formulation of Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel allows for better control and accurate placement.

Building on the proven effectiveness of Gluma Desensitizer, Heraeus Kulzer has developed Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel. According to the manufacturer, this 1-step gel provides the user with more control and accuracy during application. Heraeus also incorporated a green-color indicator for better visualization during placement and removal. The no-drip formula helps to minimize contact with soft tissue. In addition, the gel can be used with all bonding and restorative materials in any situation.

A mix of 12 dentists and hygienists participated in this evaluation of Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel. In addition to ease of controlling placement and effectiveness of the green color to aid in accurate placement, the evaluators also rated and commented on ease of use of the syringe and effectiveness of the gel at reducing or eliminating sensitivity.

Ease of Use

The evaluators were asked to rate Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel from several perspectives—ease of use of the syringe, ease of controlling placement, and ease of chairside use.

When asked to rate ease of use of the syringe, 6 evaluators rated the product as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good. With regard to ease of controlling placement, 7 evaluators gave a rating of excellent, 1 rated it as very good, 3 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as poor. And, finally, when asked to rate ease of chair side use, 6 evaluators rated Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, 1 each rated it as good, fair, and poor.

The hygienist evaluator who gave the product a poor rating with regard to controlling placement commented that she thought the product came out too quickly and flowed onto the gingiva. She solved this problem by placing a petroleum jelly barrier. This same evaluator said she would definitely recommend Gluma Desentitizer PowerGel to colleagues and that she found it to be much better than similar products.

A dentist from Hegins, PA with 19 years of experience said, “I liked the ease of placement. The gel came out easily but not with too much flow as to waste a lot of product.” This same evaluator went on to say, “The applicator tip allowed me to move the product around and visually see that all surfaces were covered as intended.”

Effectiveness of Green Color to Aid in Placement

Four of the evaluators named the green color indicator as one of their favorite features of Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel. When asked to rate this feature, 9 rated it as excellent and 3 rated it as very good. One evaluator said, “I liked both the convenience of the gel and the green color.” A hygienist from Valencia, CA, said, “The green color [helped] aid in placement.”

Reduction or Elimination of Sensitivity

With feedback from their patients, the evaluators rated the effectiveness of Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel at reducing or eliminating sensitivity. Six evaluators rated this feature as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good.

One evaluator said, “I had the chance to recall several patients who had Class 1 restorations placed, which I consider to be the most problematic with postoperative sensitivity. No one reported any sensitivity with the composite restorations placed using the Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel.” A hygienist from Charlotte, NC with 39 years of experience said, “We have an aging patient population with much xerostomia and much sensitivity for many reasons and fragile tissues. Having a great desensitizing agent is of great importance.”

Overall Satisfaction

Eleven evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel. The same 11 said they would definitely or probably purchase it in the future. When asked to give their overall satisfaction rating for Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel, 5 rated it as excellent, 6 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as fair.

A dentist from Columbia, MO summed up his evaluation by saying, “I really like this product and will use it in my practice.”
