A single scan with the ILUMA Scanner contains full cranial data that can be re-created at different resolution levels as many times as necessary without rescanning the patient.
The ILUMA Cone Beam CT (CBCT) Scanner, engineered for stability and smooth motion, can capture accurate and precise data to aid in treatment planning.
One scan provides so much cranial data that it can be reconstructed as many times as needed without having the patient return for another scan.
Ease of Use According to 3M ESPE, the ILUMA Scanner is designed for ease of use. The scanner incorporates an amorphous silicon flat panel sensor, and its medical-grade x-ray generator allows for full data capture during scanning. In addition, the system is designed for easy patient positioning and includes a motorized chair, laser positioning guides, and rests for the head and chin. When the evaluators were asked to rate ILUMA Scanner"s ease of use, 3 rated it as excellent and 3 rated it as very good. One evaluator said, “There have been some errors, but other than that, it has been great!” Another evaluator commented that “there is a very short learning curve.” A third evaluator said that the “dual monitors [make] it very easy to evaluate 2D and 3D images.”
Image Quality The ILUMA Scanner, says 3M ESPE, allows dentists to take high-quality, undistorted, highresolution CBCT scans in their offices. If a patient moves during a scan, motion reduction algorithms compensate for that motion and correct the imaging data. In addition, automatic metal artifact reduction limits the scatter effect of x-rays on metal, allowing for clear images and more detail. The evaluators rated ILUMA Scanner on image quality. Four evaluators rated the image quality as excellent and 2 rated it as very good. One evaluator said, “Great quality. Doctors love it.”
Treatment Planning The ILUMA CBCT Scanner can aid in treatment planning, according to the manufacturer, because it allows the user to reconstruct the data as many times as necessary without rescanning the patient. The vast amount of data captured with a single scan allows the dentist to reconstruct a full craniofacial view or select a smaller area for more detail. When the evaluators were asked to rate ILUMA Scanner on its ability to aid in treatment planning, 4 rated it as excellent and 2 rated it as very good. One of the evaluators said the ILUMA Scanner allowed him to see “anatomical areas that were never seen before.”
Patient Satisfaction Because the ILUMA System allows the dentist to perform the CBCT scan in the office, the patient does not need to be referred to another facility. In fact, according to the manufacturer, the dentist can scan, diagnose, and present treatment options in a single visit. The evaluators were asked about the importance of patient comfort when purchasing a CBCT scanner. Four said patient comfort is very important and 2 said it is important. When they were then asked to rate the ILUMA System on patient comfort, 3 rated it as excellent, 2 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. The evaluator who rated the scanner as good commented on its use with larger patients or those with broad shoulders. He said, “If I have a patient with broad shoulders and also a long face with protrusive features, it is hard to line up without hitting the shoulders to some degree or tipping the nose out of the 3D skin headshot.” One of the evaluators who rated the scanner as excellent for patient comfort said his “patients love it.”
Overall Satisfaction When the evaluators were asked if they would recommend the ILUMA CBCT Scanner to their colleagues, all said definitely. All of the evaluators said they would definitely or probably purchase an ILUMA System in the future. The evaluation wrapped up by asking the evaluators to give their overall satisfaction rating for the ILUMA System. Three rated it as excellent and 3 rated it as very good. One evaluator, when commenting on the image quality of the ILUMA System, said that the machine provides “incredible 3-dimensional images.”
