Product Review

According to Dentsply Caulk, this finish is retained over time. The manufacturer also claims that the nano-technology behind Lasting Touch creates better wear and stain resistance compared with other leading polishers.

Benefits of Liquid Polish

Liquid polishers, also called surface sealants, in addition to providing gloss to composite resin restorations, have also been cited as reducing microleakage at composite margins.1,2 It has been found that poor marginal adaptation and microleakage are the most common causes of composite restoration failure.34 In these studies, restorations that were polished with a liquid sealant were compared with restorations that received no treatment.

Instructions and Training

When the dentist evaluators were asked to rate the importance of instructions and training when purchasing a polish, 2 said they were very important, 3 said they were important, and 2 rated them as somewhat important. When they were then asked to rate Lasting Touch on instructions and training, the 7 dentists rated the polish as good to excellent.

Polishing with Lasting Touch includes 6 steps:

1. Etch the uninstrumented enamel before application of the polish.
2. Insert interproximal strips.
3. Apply polish using a continuous, horizontal motion.
4. Light cure for 15 seconds.
5. Remove the air-inhibited layer with a cotton pellet soaked in alcohol.
6. Buff the restoration with a dry cotton pellet.

Wear and Stain Resistance

The evaluators were asked about the importance of wear and stain resistance when purchasing a polish. They rated these attributes important to very important. The evaluators were then asked to rate Lasting Touch on wear and stain resistance. Four rated the product as good for wear resistance, while the other 3 did not rate the product on this attribute because they were not able to recheck their patients. For stain resistance, 4 of the evaluators rated Lasting Touch as good to very good. Again, because they were unable to recheck their patients, 3 evaluators did not rate the product on this criteria.

Overall Satisfaction

Lasting Touch received mixed reviews when the evaluators were asked about overall satisfaction. Four of the evaluators rated the polish good to very good, while the others rated it as fair. Some of the evaluators found polishing to be an extra step to the finishing process. The evaluators found the final gloss they achieved with Lasting Touch to be very good. They rated the variety of indications for this product good to excellent.
