Ease of use Cons:
Loosening of liquid dam The 10 dentists who participated in this Dental Product Shopper review of Opalescence Boost rated such features as ease of use, usefulness of the red color, and effectiveness. Ease of Use According to the manufacturer, Opalescence Boost’s syringe-to-syringe mixing ensures freshness and precise dosing while maximizing convenience. Ease of use was rated as excellent by 4 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as good by 2. One evaluator said, “The liquid dam went on well but needed additional attention during the visit due to loosening from moisture on the soft tissue.” A Clifton, NJ dentist with 20 years of experience said, “The consistency made it easy to spread across the surface of the tooth and easy to remove with the HVAC, yet it was thick enough not to run into areas you wanted to avoid.” Another evaluator said chairside mixing “ensures freshness each time,” adding, “The slightly thicker gel made for easier application and it didn’t run from where it was placed.” The same evaluator also said an endo evacuator tip “worked well to remove the gel from the teeth.” Red Color as a Placement Aid When asked about the usefulness of Opalescence Boost’s red color, 6 evaluators rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. One evaluator called it “helpful” but noted that the consistency “was a little too loose and it didn’t stay exactly where it was placed.” A Virginia Beach, VA dentist with 27 years in practice said it “helps with placement but doesn’t allow monitoring of the lightening progress throughout the procedure. That’s a drawback because it’s difficult to gauge until final cleanup, even after suctioning.” Two dentists with a combined 39 years of experience said they viewed the red color as a useful placement guide. One of those evaluators said it “made it much easier to check to see that the entire tooth had received an even application, and to see where we’d missed after initial placement.” The other evaluator called it “a helpful indicator, not only of coverage but also of removal,” adding, “It was easy to see where the gel wasn’t present in a consistent layer.” Effectiveness Effectiveness of Opalescence Boost was rated as excellent by 2 dentists, as very good by 6, and as good to fair by 2. When asked about patient reaction, 3 evaluators rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 3 rated it as good. A Pomona, NY dentist with 29 years of experience “used it on a grey tetracycline stain with surprisingly good results” and reported that his patient “was pleased with the ease of use and results.” An evaluator from Richardson, TX reported that one patient “felt it didn’t last very long and said that some color came back.” That same dentist also said his patients “seemed most pleased by the amount of color change...remarkably brighter and easy for them to see.” Overall Satisfaction Overall satisfaction with Opalescence Boost was rated as excellent by 1 evaluator, as very good by 5, and as good by 4. An evaluator with 19 years of experience said teeth were “noticeably whiter” and called it “much better than any product we’ve used.” ULTRADENT PRODUCTS INC.
Ultradent Products, Inc. evolved from a dentist’s quest to create more effective dental products. Just out of dental school and beginning his practice, Dr. Dan Fischer was not satisfied with many of the dental products available to him. He felt products could be developed further. His desire to develop more advanced dental products led him to create products that would set future industry standards. First Patent Dr. Fischer's first endeavor was a successful hemostatic solution called Astringedent®, developed in 1979. Astringedent set the pace for a succession of products that would soon exceed expectations in the dental industry. Ultradent's business grew rapidly, and within a 12-year period Ultradent expanded from a home operation to a 220,000 square-foot facility, which presently houses more than 900 employees. Ultradent now manufactures and packages more than 500 materials, devices and instruments. These products are used worldwide by dentists, group practices, dental and veterinary labs, government agencies and universities. Ultradent continues development and holds dozens of patents and trademarks on unique products, materials, devices and application techniques. In addition, its Products and Procedures Manual (catalog) is considered one of the best in the industry, not only because it describes the products, but also because it provides professionally illustrated, step-by-step procedures on how to use the products. |
