Product Description
Ultradent’s Opalescence dentist-controlled and
dentist-supervised take-home tooth whitening system
has been a popular and trusted tooth whitener
system since 1999, providing dentists and patients
with a tested, effective way to whiten stained and
discolored teeth. With the introduction of
Opalescence PF in 2006, Ultradent combined their
patented carbamide peroxide formula with micro -
potassium nitrate plus fluoride—a combination with
proven ability to both whiten teeth and prevent
caries. Studies have shown that Opalescence PF promotes overall enamel health and microhardness
and prevents sensitivity.3-6 The
product’s near-neutral 6.5 pH prevents
enamel demineralization during treatment,
and the 20% water content prevents
dehydration and shade relapse.
Depending on the dietary and lifestyle
habits of patients (eg, coffee and red
wine drinking or cigarette smoking),
vital teeth whitened with Opalescence
can remain lightened for years.
Indications
Opalescence is recommended for
tooth bleaching before the placement of
direct and indirect restorations. It is
indicated for removing the stains or discolorations
present on teeth from the
time of tooth eruption and/or the stains
of aging. In addition, Opalescence can
be used to treat discolorations caused
by congenital, systemic, metabolic,
pharmacologic, traumatic, or iatrogenic
factors such as dental fluorosis, tetracycline
and adult minocycline stains, trauma,
erythroblastosis fetalis, jaundice
and porphyria. It is also used on nonvital
teeth for intracoronal bleaching.
Advantages
In addition to Opalescence PF’s
proven ability to prevent caries,
improve enamel strength, and reduce
sensitivity, the product has important
features that make using it easier and
safer. Opalescence PF’s high-viscosity,
sticky gel prevents it from leaching out
of the tray, as other bleaching gels do.
This allows patients to experience more
predictable, faster results—noticeable
in days, rather than weeks. Opalescence
PF stays active for 8 to 10 hours in the
mouth during overnight whitening.7,8 To
ensure more predictable and rapid
results, Ultradent recommends that custom
trays be fabricated according to the
instructions provided with the kit. The
tray that gives the best results is the Sof-
Tray 0.035” because of its thin, soft,
and comfortable material. Proper tray
design also allows for less peroxide to
be swallowed during tray loading and
reduces chronic, long-term exposure to
peroxide. A shade guide card helps
patients follow the progress of their
whitening treatment.
Packaging
Opalescence PF is dispensed in unitdose
syringes in 10%, 15%, 20%, and
35% carbamide peroxide strengths. (The
35% concentration of carbamide peroxide
was designed for 30-minute, once
daily treatments, with results in 5-10
days.) The Doctor Kit for each strength
of Opalescence PF contains eight 1.2-mL
Opalescence syringes with tips, 2 Sof-
Tray 0.035, 5" x 5" sheets, 1 tray case,
one 1-oz Opalescence Toothpaste, and
one 1.2-mL LC Block-Out Resin syringe.
If storing this product, refrigerate to
maintain shelf life and keep out of heat
and/or direct sunlight. —Jackie Syrop
