Product Review
Lighted Mirror
According to Orascoptic, the DK lighted
mirror features a powerful LED light source that
illuminates the mirror’s reflection to increase
visibility in hard-to-see areas of the mouth.
When the 8 evaluators (4 dentists and 4
hygienists) were asked to rate the overall visual
quality of the lighted mirror, 87% rated it as
excellent to very good. One evaluator commented
that the light is “much brighter than my current
system.” Another evaluator, who rated the
lighted mirror as very good, said, “The ability to
see the distal of the second and third molars is
important to me.”
Transilluminator
Based on information from the manufacturer,
the DK transillumination instrument emits
an intense, focused beam of light to help visualize
crown fractures and caries. According to the
manufacturer, this device makes it easy to identify
anterior and posterior proximal caries.
Sixty-two percent of the evaluators rated the
effectiveness of the transilluminator as excellent;
38% rated it as very good. One of the hygienists
who evaluated the DK Kit said, “I like
this tool because it allows me to assist
the dentist in fractures that are more
severe and need attention.” Another
evaluator commented that the device is
“excellent for interproximal caries
detection and fractures.”
Oral Lesion Exam
The DK oral lesion screening instrument
works in conjunction with an
acetic acid rinse to help visualize oral
lesions. According to the manufacturer,
this exam enhances the ability to identify
potentially cancerous tissue in the
early stages of development.
When asked about the effectiveness
of the oral lesion exam, 6 evaluators
rated it as excellent and 2 rated it as
good. One evaluator said, “All I can say
is wow! It is perfect for my office
because you can use it in dim light.”
This evaluator went on to say that
another product she has used requires it
“to be very dark and that is impossible
in my office.” Another evaluator said,
“During the first 6 exams with the trial
package we identified 2 lesions that were
referred for biopsy.” A third evaluator
noted that some patients complained
about the taste of the acetic acid rinse.
Overall Value of Kit
The initial cost of the Orascoptic DK

Some insurance plans cover the exam.
When the evaluators were asked to
rate the overall value of the kit, 75% rated
it as excellent to very good; 25% rated it
as good. One of the evaluators who rated

Another evaluator, however, said “Once
the initial purchase is made, the system is
a better bargain than my current system.”
