Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme at-home tooth bleaching system is now available from Ultradent. The kit uses the Opalescence PF formula, which whitens teeth with less sensitivity while rebuilding enamel and preventing caries, according to Ultradent. A 2004 study in the Journal of the American Dental Association of 7 carbamide bleaching agents and their effects on enamel microhardness found that higher concentrations of carbamide peroxide with 0.11% ion fluoride can bleach teeth in a shorter period with fewer hazardous effects on the enamel mineral content1. |
A 2005 study in Operative Dentistry looked at the effect of bleaching agents on caries susceptibility2. This study found that specimens treated with 20% carbamide peroxide with PF (0.11% fluoride and potassium nitrate) were less susceptible to caries than their controls.
Improved Features
The Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme kit now uses 10% hydrogen peroxide for faster, superior results. A new flavor, peach, has been added to mint and melon. Two of the dentists who evaluated the taste found it fair, but 3 said the flavors were good to very good.
The new, high-tech packaging also allows for improved stability and shelf life. Refrigeration ensures a 12-month shelf life; without refrigeration, shelf life is reduced to 6 months.
Product Instructions
According to Ultradent, the new tray design is easy and convenient to use. After the Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme tray is removed from the package, the patient centers it on the arch and gently sucks down. The external tray is removed and the patient lightly taps on the internal tray to ensure it adheres to the teeth. After 30 to 60 minutes, the patient removes the tray and brushes his or her teeth to remove any excess gel. According to the manufacturer, results can be seen in 5 to 10 days. All of the evaluators gave the product instructions very high marks.
Ease of Use and Effectiveness
Dentist evaluators rated Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme easy to use. One dentist, however, reported that, “Some worked great, but others had to be contoured with fingers.” The evaluators gave the product high ratings for effectiveness, patient compliance, and the product instructions.
Packaging
Four of the 5 dentists who tested Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme found the packaging very good to excellent. One dentist, who rated the packaging as good, reported that individual packs were difficult to open.
Overall Satisfaction
Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme was rated excellent by 4 of the evaluators on sensitivity. Overall satisfaction with the product was high among all dentists testing it. One commented, “My only reason not to use this product in the future is that I really like the Opalescence product we are using now.” Three of the evaluating dentists said that they would definitely purchase the product in the future and 2 said that they probably would. When asked if they would recommend Opalescence Tréswhite Supreme to their colleagues, 2 dentists said they would definitely recommend it and 2 said probably. One dentist said that he wasn’t sure.
