Algin'X Ultra Alginate Alternative
Algin'X Ultra's dimensional stability enables immediate or delayed pouring and repouring for up to 2 weeks.
Now available from DENTSPLY Caulk, Algin'X Ultra is a VPS-based alginate alternative with dimensional stability that enables pouring and repouring of models at any time, from immediately after disinfection to up to 2 weeks later. Formulated for optimal flexibility, convenience, and speed, the material is ideal for study models, preliminary impressions, orthodontia, temporary fabrication, and removable prosthetics.
Spearmint-flavored Algin'X Ultra is available in 50 mL cartridges and in 380 mL DECA cartridges (for dynamic mixing machines).
Comparison to Alginate
Unlike some products, which require a waiting period due to degassing, Algin'X Ultra can be poured immediately after disinfection. The option of delayed or repeated pours further enhances flexibility, especially for multiple molds, back-to-back patients, or late in the day.
Comparison to alginate was rated by 12 of the 13 dentists who evaluated Algin'X Ultra'4 as excellent, 4 as very good, 3 as good, and 1 as fair. Eleven evaluators rated the ability to pour multiple casts'6 as excellent, 4 as very good, and 1 as good. One evaluator cited 'the ability to send to the lab to be poured up and the rigidity for impressions for repair' as the features he likes most. One evaluator described Algin'X Ultra as 'an excellent product that surpasses alginate in many ways. The best feature by far was the ability to repour a second model if needed immediately or in the near future.'
Ease of Use
Algin'X Ultra's automix cartridges provide a homogenous, consistent mix while reducing dispensing and cleanup steps. When asked how easily and cleanly the material mixes, 7 evaluators rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, 2 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as fair. Convenience of automixing was rated as excellent by 7 evaluators, as very good by 1, as good by 4, and as fair by 1.
One of the 2 evaluators who de scri - bed the material as 'runny' said it 'dripped through the tray's retention holes.' An other evaluator 'would like a little more stiffness to help push it into the buccal fold area.' An evaluator who 'would purchase it if it were more easily dispensed' noted that 'more than 6 mixing tips per cartridge would be helpful.'
Five evaluators called ease of use their favorite feature. One evaluator noted, 'We were hard pressed to find something that needed improvement.' One evaluator called it 'very easy to use with less mess and cleanup.'
Algin'X Ultra affords exceptional flexibility without sacrificing accuracy in the resulting diagnostic impressions. Distortion during removal is minimal.
