Full-Coverage Esthetic Restorations for Early Childhood Caries
All too often, very young children present with severe early childhood caries. They present with decay that has devastated their primary teeth, destroying both form and function. The demand for full-coverage esthetic restorations is higher than ever. Parents and children alike insist on alternatives to the stainless steel crowns that were common in the last generation.
Zirconia is relatively new to the pediatric dental scene. Zirconia crowns fulfill the requirements for full-coverage esthetic restoratives because they are esthetic, durable, and simple to use.
The following 2 case studies show the all too familiar scenarios of early childhood caries.
Case 1: A 5-year-old male presented for a check-up. After a visual and radiographic examination, I concluded that there was rampant decay on all of the patient's primary molars. I discussed treatment options with the patient and his family, including the choices in different types of crowns. It was of utmost importance to the family that I placed a "tooth-colored" restoration on the patient's tooth.
After discussing treatment options, we chose to perform a full-coverage restoration on the patient?s lower right first primary molar because of the extent of decay and pulpal involvement. For the final treatment, we chose a restoration with a NuSmile ZR Pediatric Crown (NuSmile), primarily for esthetics, but also for the durability of the zirconia material.
Using NuSmile ZR Pediatric Crowns, I did not encounter any challenges because the crowns are easy to use and esthetically pleasing. The final outcome was successful as both the patient and the patient?s family were happy with the restoration.
Case 2: A 3-year-old female presented with severe early childhood caries. With a visual and radiographic examination, it was clear that all 6 of the patient's maxillary anterior teeth were affected. I discussed treatment options with the patient and the patient's parent, and the final treatment chosen for this case was 6 full-coverage esthetic restorative crowns instead of extraction. I used NuSmile ZR Pediatric Crowns (NuSmile) for this case as well.
The final outcome was successful as the patient had an esthetically pleasing smile. The patient was restored both functionally and esthetically.
