The ROI of DEXIS and Dentrix Workflow Integration
For our November issue, which focuses on the ROI of Technology, Dental Product Shopper caught up with Gerald Bittner Jr., DDS, of San Jose, CA. Here, Dr. Bittner shares his views on the importance of digital workflow, both in his practice and in the profession.
Q: You were a Dentrix beta tester and early adopter. What made you then switch to DEXIS sensors?
A: You have practice management software [Dentrix] that your staff is using, and it’s working well for you. It’s easier to change an x-ray system than it is to change your practice management software. You want everything to play with that hub. That’s why we changed to DEXIS, and basically now we’re not clicking a bunch of buttons to get to one x-ray…If somebody came out with a better-looking sensor or more comfortable one—which I find hard to believe—but it did not integrate seamlessly, my staff would say no. It’s that huge a difference.
Q: How have DEXIS and Dentrix benefited your practice?
A: To take an x-ray and to put it into the system when we had the bridge [non-seamless integration], it was taking anywhere from 5 to 7 minutes. With DEXIS, you get your x-rays in less than a minute. When you just do the math, you’re saving 5 minutes per patient, for 20 or 30 patients a day…You can see how those numbers add up really quickly. It became clear fiscally, if you know what your price per hour is for your practice and what your overhead is per hour and minute, you can tell really quickly that it was easy for us to dump $100,000 worth of sensors, and I recouped that cost within about a year just through time savings.
Q: What do dentists need to know about digital workflow and seamless integration?
A: I think the reality is it has a huge effect on efficiency in your practice because your patients appreciate the fact that they’re not there sitting with their mouths open any longer than necessary… Corporate dentistry is here to stay. If you want to be a successful private practice, you’ve got to keep up with technology. Patients expect it, they demand it, and they deserve it…I don’t care how good you are. If you’re using less than state-of–the art equipment, the patient’s perception is you’re not as good as somebody else, even if that dentist is mediocre.
Q: Do you have any advice for dentists considering the switch to DEXIS and Dentrix?
A: Too many dentists, because we’re taught minutia, do too much planning and weighing things out. And it costs them time and money. In the last 35+ years, I’ve spent more money on bouncing around from different technologies and getting things to work. This works and it works well. If you’re even considering it, do it. For every day you waste, you’re losing time, effort, money, and patients.
