After 45 years of picking up pennies wherever he went, a Louisiana man recently deposited them at a local bank so he could pay a dental bill. Ortha Anders of Ruston, Louisiana, hauled over 500,000 pennies – in fifteen 5-gallon water jugs – to his bank, where it took 5 hours to count them all. The total? $5,136.14!
That’s a lot of cash for 73-year-old Anders, who told the News-Star, a Louisiana newspaper, “I became convinced that spotting a lost or dropped penny was an additional God-given incentive reminding me to always be thankful.” He plans to pay a recent dental bill with his savings.
