The results are in: Prescription tray therapy works for treating chronic periodontal disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry.
Sixty-six patients with chronic periodontal disease, both smokers and non-smokers, were prescribed the customized Perio Tray by Perio Protect LLC. Perio Tray delivers a gel with 1.7% hydrogen peroxide deep into periodontal pockets. All patients included in the study had been in long-term maintenance therapy and exhausted treatment options before being prescribed Perio Tray.
Data were collected at tray delivery at 6 months, 1 year, and at annual intervals up to 5 years. The results revealed that patients who used the tray delivery of peroxide once or twice a day for 10 minutes saw significant reductions, 60% to 85%, in gingival bleeding. The clinical and statistical reductions were observed at 6 months and maintained for the length of the study. Notably, only 1 tooth out of 1745 teeth was lost to periodontal disease.
“I did everything possible for these patients before the prescription trays. Most had had at least one surgical intervention and continued to bleed in more than 50% of their pockets,” said Dr. R. Bruce Cochrane, the lead author and treating periodontist.
The data from the study reinforce clinical trial results of Perio Tray, and are helpful to dentists and hygienists who are weighing the benefits of prescription tray therapy.
