Zirconia, RMGIC, Ceramic Primer—A Perfect Combination


With esthetic multilayered, high-strength zirconia, teeth can be restored in both the anterior and posterior. One hurdle to the successful use of these materials is proper adhesion. Traditional luting cements aren’t really the answer because of the complicated cleaning steps, technique issues, and challenges with maintaining proper isolation.

A solution to the problem of proper adhesion is the use of resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC), which offer some advantages over resin cements: they like moisture, they work well on subgingival margins, they are not technique sensitive, and they offer chemical adhesion to zirconia.

The cementation of a zirconia crown using RMGIC is relatively simple, but one critical step is the application of ceramic primer to the restoration intaglio before try-in. The ceramic primer allows for the chemical adhesion of RMGI to the ceramic; without the primer only mechanical retention is achieved. One of the best types of ceramic primer to use is one that incorporates MDP (1-Methacryloyloxydecyl Dihydrogen Phosphate) in its chemistry.
