Blast Lite Curing Light
The light-weight, wand-shaped Blast Lite provides high-power, 5-second curing with user-friendly handling in a compact design.
Smaller and lighter-weight than the LED Blast, First Medica’s cordless, wand-shaped Blast Lite is ideal for quick procedures and less burdensome for prolonged use. The high-power curing light provides a deep cure in 5 seconds or less and the long-lasting lithium-ion battery enables more than 1000 5-second cures.
Blast Lites are assembled in the United States in an FDA-approved, GMP-certified facility using company employees. The lights come with a 2-year warranty, which includes the battery.
Ergonomics and Unit Size
Of the 13 dentists who evaluated Blast Lite, 4 evaluators rated ergonomics as excellent, 7 rated them as very good, and 2 rated them as good. Seven evaluators rated unit size as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good. Eight evaluators called size and/or ergonomics the features they liked most, noting “perfect size and nice, solid weight” and “excellent handling.”
“In our New York office, space is everything,” said 1 evaluator. “It has a small footprint and can fit almost anywhere.”
Output Power and Curing Time
Blast Lite offers high power output (>1600 mW/ cm2) and a 5-second cure, both of which were rated as excellent by 9 evaluators, as very good by 3, and as poor by 1. An Illinois dentist said “the extremely high power made curing faster” and a New York dentist reported “consistent cure strength with no diminishing output.” One evaluator “would like a faster curing time” and 3 evaluators identified curing time as their favorite feature; 1 evaluator cited “the 5-second cure, multiple options on time, and output” and another said, “The 5-second cure is fabulous. I have no complaints.”
Ease of Use and Access
Blast Lite features a continuous run cycle, a programmable audible beep, and timer settings of 5, 10, and 20 seconds. A removable glass tip eliminates the need for a sleeve and can be sterilized. Furthermore, the metal case facilitates cleaning.
Ease of use was rated as excellent by 8 evaluators, as very good by 3, and as good to fair by 2. Six evaluators said the “on” and “cure” buttons/switches should be more distinctive/visible, and 1 called the rubberized buttons “easier to press than those on our current unit.”
Other suggested improvements included “a distinct ‘off’ sound,” “reusable tips to enable compressing of composite material while curing,” and “a small, removable orange shield right by the tip…the existing shield is too far away from the curing light and doesn’t protect the eyes if you use loupes.” One dentist suggested “changing the 5-second audible beep” while another “liked the programmable beep.”
Other evaluators cited ease of use as their favorite feature, calling it “extremely light, cordless, and easy to use” and noting “ease of cleaning” and “the ability to hold a charge.” Another evaluator reported “very easy disinfection.”
A dentist who would definitely recommend and purchase the Blast Lite said, “The construction is similar to my current light but it’s sleeker and easier to keep clean with fewer rubber or plastic/ metal interfaces.”
Ease of access to the oral cavity was rated as excellent by 6 dentists, as very good by 6, and as good by 1. One evaluator said “the tip angulation prevents it from getting back to the third molars with ease.”
Four evaluators noted the need to cover a larger working area; 1 suggested “a larger tip diameter…the smaller tip forces you to cure a larger, wider restoration in sections.” First Medica offers a reverse turbo tip that increases the curing area. This tip retails for $149 and has a diameter of 11 mm.
One dentist cited “being able to get to the posterior” as one of the features he liked most and another said the small curing tip “allows us to access hard-toreach places very easily.”
Patient comfort was rated as excellent by 9 evaluators and as very good by 3. Eleven evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend Blast Lite to colleagues and 9 would definitely or probably purchase it. Overall satisfaction was rated as excellent by 2 evaluators, as very good by 9, and as good by 1. “It’s small but carries a big punch!” noted 1 evaluator.
