Fuji IX GP — The easy-to-use, handle and place fluoride releasing alternative to expensive compomers and composites and in many cases, amalgam. It cures extremely hard and is very wear resistant.

This new addition to GC America’s line of glass ionomers offers the fastest setting time available, as well as increased fluoride release and better translucency

The GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA, a new glass ionomer restorative, is now available from GC America Inc. The new product maintains the working time of Fuji IX GP FAST, but allows completed final finishing just 2 minutes and 30 seconds from initial mix. The fast setting time of GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA provides improved stability against water and reduces the amount of time patients spend waiting in the treatment chair.

Evaluators rated GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA as having excellent ease of use, cavity adaptation, viscosity, and packability. “The product suits my style of practice. It’s easy to use, sets fast, and is effective,” one dentist commented. Another evaluator said that the product is “compactable in a short time and polished well.” One evaluator noted, however, that “in some areas it is difficult to get the applicator tip where I want it.”
According to the manufacturer, GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA allows bonding to moist conditioned enamel and dentin, so that dental dam isolation is optional. The product is useful for caries control restorations, long-term provisionalizations, minimally invasive measures, and as a high-strength foundation beneath coronal coverage restorations.

Setting Time

DPS_HPS Edit_(Pgs 70-98) 8/10/07 6:52 PM Page 88 89 Dental Product Shopper Vol. 1 No. 1 IX GP EXTRA, the evaluators gave high marks. One evaluator noted that “One or 2 capsules set before I wanted them to, but I think that’s worth the faster setting time.”

Improved Features
According to the manufacturer, GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA also offers initial fluoride release that is 6 times higher than previous versions of the product, promoting faster caries control, remineralization, and the maintenance of an excellent marginal seal.
In addition, GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA has improved translucency, allowing more esthetic restorations. It is available in shades A2, A3, A3.5, B3, C4, and the new B1 shade, which is specially formulated for pediatric applications. The product is more polishable than earlier Fuji IX versions, according to one of the dentist evaluators.

Caries Control
While caries control was not something that could be assessed in this shortterm evaluation, GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA does have increased fluoride release. According to the manufacturer, this increased release of fluoride is 6 times higher than the previous version of the product. A study in the 2003 issue of Dental Materials by Preston and colleagues examined the fluoride recharge potential of glass ionomers, resin-modified glass ionomers, compomers, and composites. The results showed that the glass ionomer materials displayed a greater potential for fluoride recharge than composites. The authors concluded that “where possible glass-ionomer based materials should be used in patients who have a high caries rate.”1

Indications and Contraindications
GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA is indicated for Class 1 and 2 restorations in deciduous teeth, nonload-bearing Class 1 and 2 restorations in permanent teeth, intermediate restorative and base material for heavy stress situations in class I and II cavities using the sandwich laminate technique, class V and root surface restorations, and core build-up.
The product should not be used for pulp capping or in the rare case that it causes sensitivity.
