ARESTIN Periodontal Antibiotic

OraPharma, Inc

Using ARESTIN (minocycline hydrochloride) after scaling and root planing procedures effectively treats periodontal disease.

ARESTIN contains “Microspheres”—tiny, invisible, bead-like particles that are fi lled with the antibiotic minocycline. They release the drug over time into the infected periodontal pocket, killing bacteria for up to 21 days. ARESTIN also signifi cantly reduces the size of periodontal pockets compared to SRP alone, kills the bacteria most commonly associated with periodontal disease, and reduces bleeding on probing of the gums.

The 8 dentists and hygienists who participated in this Dental Product Shopper evaluation of ARESTIN rated and commented on several features, including ease of administration, customer service from the manufacturer, and improved clinical results (over scaling and root planing alone).

Ease of Use

ARESTIN is packaged in a unit-dose cartridge, which is inserted into a cartridge handle for product administration. Each cartridge contains enough ARESTIN for 1 periodontal pocket. It requires no preparation before administration, comes premixed and premeasured, and it does not require refrigeration or local anesthesia. Ease of administration was rated as excellent by 3 evaluators, as very good by 3, as good by 1, and as fair by 1. Six evaluators noted this as the feature they like best, with 1 noting that ARESTIN is “easy to apply to pockets” and that it confers “no sensitivity to the patients.” The most common complaint with ARESTIN was the need for a smaller tip for easier access. An evaluator who rated overall satisfaction as excellent said, “A thin, more oval-shaped tip may be helpful.” Speed of administration was another feature rated by the evaluators, with 5 calling it excellent and the remaining 3 giving it a very good or good rating.

ARESTIN contains the antibiotic minocycline, a member of the tetracycline class of antibiotics. Minocycline exerts its antimicrobial activity by inhibiting protein synthesis and has been shown to be effective against the pathogens associated with periodontal disease.

Once ARESTIN is inserted, it immediately adheres to the periodontal pocket. Gingival crevicular fl uid hydrolyzes the polymer, causing waterfi lled channels to form inside the Microspheres, allowing a controlled, sustained release of minocycline.

Improved clinical results (over scaling and root planing alone) was rated as excellent by 3 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as fair by 1. One evaluator from Indiana simply said, “It works.” When asked what they liked best about ARESTIN, another evaluator said, “It is easy to use and works great!” Evaluators were asked to rate how easily the product fi ts into their current protocol for periodontal treatment. Four rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as fair.

When asked to rate how effectively the single-dose cartridge eliminates product waste, 5 evaluators rated it as excellent, 2 as very good, and 1 as good. One evaluator noted, “Occasionally there [are] cartridge jams,” however, “dispensing of the product has gotten much better.”

Manufacturer Support

Evaluators rated customer service from OraPharma, as well. Five evaluators rated it as excellent, 2 as very good, and 1 as fair. One evaluator said: “Our OraPharma/J&J rep is great. He is always there when needed and keeps us completely up to date on product information, study results, new products, [and more].”

The evaluators were also asked to rate how effectively the patient education materials help increase treatment acceptance, with 2 rating it as excellent, 1 as very good, and 5 as good to fair. One evaluator noted that the brochures “could use more visuals.”

Overall Satisfaction

When asked about their overall satisfaction with ARESTIN, 6 evaluators rated it as excellent and 2 rated it as very good. An evaluator who gave the product an overall rating of excellent and said they would defi nitely recommend ARESTIN to colleagues said, “It is the best method we have for depositing antibiotic directly into the pocket.”
