Safe Sedate Dental Nasal Mask
Med-Dent Safety and Supply Company
The Safe Sedate dental nasal mask offers improved safety, patient comfort, and convenience for dentists and team
According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 15% of the population declines dental treatment because of anxiety. Many of these patients can be helped with the professional use of nitrous oxide.
Med-Dent’s Safe Sedate dental nasal mask is a single patient use, disposable nitrous oxide delivery system to replace all existing standard nitrous oxide rubber goods and nasal hoods—which can often be difficult to sterilize. The delivery of nitrous oxide with the Safe Sedate nasal mask enables clinicians to sedate patients and decrease occupational exposure to the dental staff at the same time.
Ten evaluators with a combined 246 years of experience participated in Dental Product Shopper’s evaluation of Safe Sedate. Evaluators rated several features, including visibility of oral cavity, room turnover and cleanup, scavenging system, and overall satisfaction with the product.
Visibility of Oral Cavity
According to the manufacturer, because Safe Sedate moves where the patient moves and does not have obstructive hoses, clinicians are able to position themselves for better access to the work area.
Safe Sedate’s visibility of the oral cavity while working with the mask in place was well-received by evaluators; 6 rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. An evaluator with 13 years of experience said, “Visibility is greatly increased due to the translucent material used as well as the decreased size of the nosepiece.”
Room Turnover and Cleanup
According to the manufacturer, Safe Sedate’s disposable design eliminates respiratory cross-contaminations of tubing and allows for faster clean up and room turnover.
When the 10 evaluators were asked to rate the room turnover and cleanup of the mask by the staff, 5 rated it excellent, 4 rated it very good, and 1 rated it as fair. A dentist from Croton-on-Hudson, NY, said he, “loved how easy it is to dispose of the whole set up when done.” The same evaluator also added that, “[It was] easier to use than we first thought and became a quicker set up with each patient we used it on.”
When asked if he would recommend Safe Sedate to colleagues or contacts within the dental profession, the evaluator answered definitely.
According to Med-Dent, becaue of Safe Sedate’s design, a negative pressure is created around the patient’s face, so even nitrous oxide gas exhaled through the mouth is drawn into the scavenging system.
When asked to rate Safe Sedate’s scavenging system’s ability to decrease occupational exposure to leaking nitrous from mask, 6 evaluators rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. A clinician with 12 years of experience said, “I felt like the delivery of N2O was more effective and safe.”
When asked what he would like to see improved about Safe Sedate, an evaluator with 32 years in practice said, “The pull back on the scavenger system and the nasal cannulas were a source of complaints from my patients.” This evaluator went on to rate Safe Sedate’s scavenging system as good.
When the evaluators were asked if they would recommend Safe Sedate to their colleagues, 8 said they definitely or probably would. Six of the 10 evaluators said they definitely or probably would purchase Safe Sedate in the future.
Evaluators were asked to rate their overall satisfaction with Safe Sedate. Three evaluators rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, 2 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as fair. An evaluator with 28 years of experience summarized her evaluation of Safe Sedate saying, “This product was a very clever solution to many of the day-to-day challenges we encounter in using nitrous.”
