Eco-friendly SafeGauze Green is 100% natural, 100% biodegradable, and pesticide- and chlorine-free.

Medicom’s new SafeGauze Green is the only nonwoven gauze made from organically grown cotton and lyocell, a wood pulp fiber certifi ed by the Forest Steward ship Council to ensure that each tree taken is re placed. The 100% natural and 100% biodegradable gauze sponges come in 2"x 2" and 4"x 4" sizes.

A group of 12 evaluators (dentists, hygienists, and assistants) participated in this Dental Product Shopper evaluation of SafeGauze Green, rating such features as absorption, linting, and innovation.

The manufacturer describes SafeGauze Green as highly absorbent and luxuriously soft. Level of ab sorption was rated as excellent by 6 evaluators, as very good by 2, as good by 3, and as poor by 1. One evaluator said, “It didn’t seem as wet…was very absorbent and I didn’t need to use as many.”

Another evaluator said, “[The gauze] controlled moisture well.”

Seven evaluators said absorption was the feature they liked most about the product. “It was great for oral surgery and very comfortable as a throat barrier during extractions…very soft, absorbent, and strong,” said a Denver, CO, dentist who called it much better than similar gauzes. A Boston, MA, dentist described the absorbency as “fabulous,” adding that it “allows for less waste.”

A Stratford, CT, general practitioner said he “liked the texture and absorption…would replace my current brand.” Another dentist, who rated SafeGauze Green much better than similar products, noted, “The tight weaving and superior water absorption allows it to stay in place and hold up under longer procedures.”

When asked about softness, 4 evaluators rated SafeGauze Green as excellent, 5 rated it as very good, 2 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as fair. One evaluator selected softness as the feature he’d like to see improved. Another dentist, in practice for 5 years, noted that “the only way I could tell the difference was without gloves, when it felt slightly rougher than my normal gauze.”

Level of Linting

Described by the manufacturer as nonlinting, SafeGauze Green’s level of linting was rated as excellent by 7 evaluators, as very good by 2, and as good by 3.

The 3 evaluators who cited level of linting as the feature they liked most remarked: “It doesn’t shred,” “I loved that it didn’t leave lint behind,” and “We like the lack of any linting…no residue.”

Product Innovation

The World Health Organization cites source reduction (selection of materials that are less wasteful or generate less hazardous waste) as a means of signifi cantly reducing healthcare-generated waste.1 In addition to being completely biodegradable, SafeGauze Green’s cotton is organically grown, which means it is pesticideand insecticide-free and the natural fi bers are processed without chlorine or bleach. Plus, all of the SafeGauze Green packaging is recyclable.

Ten of the 12 evaluators ranked the gauze’s innovative feature (natural and eco-friendly). Six evaluators rated it as excellent, 3 as very good, and 1 as good. Three evaluators cited being eco-friendly as the feature they liked most. One of these evaluators, a New York dentist who called it much better than similar products, commented that “being eco-friendly is defi nitely a plus—for the patients, our practice, and the environment.”

Overall Satisfaction

Overall satisfaction was rated as excellent by 3 evaluators, as very good by 7, and as good to fair by 2. Ten of the evaluators said they would defi nitely or probably recommend SafeGauze Green to their colleagues. A general practitioner from Palmyra, NY, called SafeGauze Green “a high-quality product I’d recommend for anyone trying to be eco-friendly.” A dentist from Boston, MA, said, “My hygienist doesn’t want to use another gauze now! Our offi ce is switching!”
