Sonicare FlexCare+ Power Toothbrush
The Sonicare FlexCare+ offers new features designed to encourage longer and more thorough brushing.
New from Philips, the Sonicare FlexCare+ is designed to motivate patients to brush correctly and for the appropriate duration. A new Gum Care mode optimizes gum health by prompting brushing for a full 3-minute cycle in areas requiring more attention, while the Quadpacer encourages thorough brushing of each quadrant. Ease of use is enhanced by the ergonomically designed handle, the easy-to-read display panel, and the brush head sanitizer with UV cleaning technology.
The Sonicare FlexCare+ has been shown to be superior to a manual brush in reducing plaque overall and in hard-to-reach areas, and in reducing sites of gingival bleeding over time.1 When compared to another power brush, the Sonicare FlexCare+ demonstrated more effective plaque removal. 2 Patented sonic technology provides powerful but gentle dynamic cleaning action, reaching deep between teeth and along the gum line. The ProResults brush heads with wider bristle range and contour fit also include “reminder bristles.”
Eleven of the 14 hygienists who evaluated the FlexCare+ rated plaque removal as excellent, 2 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. Ability to make the gums look and feel healthy was rated as excellent by 9 hygienists, as very good by 4, and as good by 1. One evaluator said, “it does clean but your gums and teeth tickle quite a bit.” Six evaluators cited “excellent cleaning” as their favorite feature; comments included “I love how smooth my teeth feel” and “it really makes your whole mouth feel clean.” An evaluator who cited plaque control as her favorite feature called it “an excellent brush that leaves your mouth feeling very clean.” Another evaluator said it “helps to heal gums.”
The compact head’s ability to reach hard-to-access areas was rated as excellent by 11 evaluators, as very good by 1, and as good by 2. One evaluator suggested increasing the angle “for better access to the lower anterior linguals without tissue contact” and another “would like a prophy-cup-shaped head so it can better adapt around the tooth.” One hygienist “loved the choice between the 2 brush heads.”
Ease of Use
Ease of use was rated as excellent by 9 evaluators, as very good by 3, and as good by 2. Three evaluators called the packaging “difficult to open,” and another said, “when first learning to use it the head bumps against the opposite teeth.” A California hygienist who said she would probably recommend and purchase the brush said it “makes power brushing easy with less mess,” adding, “I love the sanitizer unit.”
Brush handle ergonomics were rated as excellent by 10 evaluators, as very good by 1, and as good by 3. One evaluator noted, “the handle is a little thin. I tended to grip it harder to hold on and would accidently push the button and shut it off.” Another cited “the slim handle and less vibration and noise” as the features she liked most.
The Gum Care mode with the Smartimer encourages 2 minutes of whole-mouth cleaning plus an additional minute of gentle cleaning for problem areas along the gum line. In addition, the Quadpacer encourages thorough brushing of each quadrant.
The Gum Care mode’s usefulness for encouraging longer brushing was rated as excellent by 6 evaluators, as very good by 3, and as good by 5. When asked about the Quadpacer’s ability to encourage more thorough brushing, 10 evaluators rated it as excellent and 4 rated it as very good to good. Three hygienists cited the different modes/options as the feature they liked most. One evaluator’s “9-year-old daughter used the smaller head on the gentler options and repeatedly said how much she liked it.”
Overall satisfaction with FlexCare+ was rated as excellent by 9 evaluators, as very good by 4, and as good by 1. All 14 evaluators would definitely or probably recommend the brush and 13 said they would definitely or probably purchase it. “It works wonderfully,” said an evaluator who called it much better than similar brushes. “I’d definitely recommend it to anyone with sensitive teeth or gums.” A Georgia hygienist said, “I like the way it removes plaque, leaving my mouth feeling very clean…I think it really improves oral health. I love everything about it.”
