Sterisil System Dental Water Purification
The Sterisil System is designed to provide "distilled quality" water to any dental facility.
Sterisil describes the Sterisil System as ideal for any dental facility, from new construction and extensive remodels, to retrofits in an existing office. This point-of-entry water purification system can be wall- or cabinet-mounted, and it is designed to easily connect to the municipal water supply.
According to the manufacturer, the Sterisil System is engineered to provide "distilled quality" autoclave water and treated dental water ( 10 cfu/ mL HPC bacteria). This rating is 50 times below the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Dental Association guidelines.
Dental Product Shopper invited 6 current users of the Sterisil System to participate in this evaluation. They were asked to rate and comment on several features, including time savings and ease of monitoring, the environmental friendliness of the system, and the elimination of autoclave water.
Time Savings and Ease of Monitoring
The Sterisil System requires no tablets for daily dental water use. In addition, it has a fully automated monitoring system that takes only a few minutes each year for a simple cartridge replacement. Visual and audible alarms signal the dental facility.
When the evaluators were asked to rate times savings with the Sterisil System, all 6 evaluators rated it as excellent. With regard to ease of use of the automated monitoring, 5 evaluators rated it as excellent and 1 rated it as very good.
An evaluator with 26 years of experience said, "We are a dental hygiene clinic, so the fact that we don't have to monitor that students add tablets and manage the water system correctly is huge."She went on to say, "With Sterisil, all [the students] have to do is fill their water bottles from the appropriate faucet." An evaluator with 20 years of experience who has been using the Sterisil System for more than 3 years commented, "Just set it up and let it work. Very low maintenance."
Eco-Friendliness of System
The Sterisil System has no plastic containers, so it does not add to landfill waste. In addition, it uses a natural, nontoxic disinfectant. When asked to rate the eco-friendliness of the Sterisil System, 5 evaluators rated it as excellent and 1 rated it as very good. An evaluator with 10 years of experience said, "We love the Sterisil System."
Elimination of Autoclave Water
According to the manufacturer, the Sterisil System provides water for multiple dental operatories, autoclaves, and drinking water dispensers. The autoclave water is purified to 0 ppm total dissolved solids, eliminating the need to purchase separate autoclave water.
All 6 of the evaluators rated the elimination of autoclave water as excellent. An evaluator with 30 years of experience said,"My operatory water is UV disinfected, filtered, deionized, and all dissolved solids are completely removed before the water enters the treatment areas or sterilization room." He went on to say, "I enjoy the confidence this system give me because I always know the status of my water quality and it is always excellent."
All of the evaluators said they would recommend the Sterisil System to their colleagues and purchase it in the future. When asked to give their overall satisfaction rating for the system, 5 rated it as excellent and 1 rated it as good.
An evaluator who noted that the Sterisil System is much better than similar products said, "Water quality is a very important issue to me. The Sterisil System has surpassed my expectations." Another evaluator, who is the director of a hygiene program, said, "In 8 years of being the director of the program, purchasing Sterisil has been our wisest decision."
When asked if there was anything about the Sterisil System he would like to see improved, an evaluator who rated all features of the system as excellent said, "The company is always looking to improve the product, so you don't have to worry about it becoming out of date."
