Solea’s CO2 laser operates at a unique wavelength of 9.3 µm and has sophisticated, yet simple, computer controls that enable high-speed, precision cutting on both hard and soft tissue. As the first Computer Aided Preparation laser system in dentistry, Solea’s 9.3 µm beam is optimized by galvos—computer-controlled motors that move mirrors inside the handpiece. The mirrors manipulate the beam thousands of times per second, creating patterns that are ideal for any tissue being cut: enamel, dentin, or soft tissue. In addition to being fast and precise, the Solea laser is free of vibration, virtually noiseless, and anesthesia-free for the majority of procedures, which helps reduce patients’ pain and anxiety. With a familiar handpiece and an easy-to-navigate touch screen, Solea also offers a unique variable speed foot pedal. Simple to use, Solea is the only CO2 hard-tissue laser available and can be mastered in a single day. Solea’s computer controls facilitate an easy transition from the drill and can replace the need for drills in a vast majority of procedures. As an experienced erbium user and one of the first Solea users, I find Solea's CO2 medium and 9300nm wavelength has the ability to ablate enamel, dentin and caries rapidly and performs extremely well when incising or excising all types of oral soft tissue with excellent hemostatic properties. Innovative differences incorporated into Solea by Convergent Dental, include a variable speed foot pedal which can manipulate repetition rate easily from single digits over 2200 Hz. I find that this foot pedal gives me tremendous control in such a way that I don't have to stop and change settings in the middle of a procedure. My young patients have stated they like the new laser because it is fast, quiet and reduces the need for being numb in the majority of both soft and hard tissue procedures. ![]() One of the first five users As a former erbium user and having purchased one of the first 5 Soleas ever delivered, I believe this laser has the potential to revolutionize dentistry as we know it! Even as I work up the learning curve, with a first of its kind system, Solea cuts with speed and precision like I have never seen before. The soft tissue capabilities have allowed me to perform bloodless and virtually painless procedures that had been routinely referred out. Tooth preparation on the lab bench was impressive, and in the mouth, even more remarkable! The computer controls that are built into the system make it easy and intuitive to use. The variable speed foot pedal allows me to essentially change settings on the fly, and I can select the size of my virtual burr, from ¼ to 1 mm in diameter. The company continues to make improvements at a rapid pace which makes me believe that Solea is destined to be a show stopper in the very near future.
