This innovative restoration combines lifelike esthetics with the strength of a PFM.

All-zirconia crowns are known for their exceptional strength and durability. But esthetics? Not so much. Metal-free porcelain crowns boast lifelike translucency and reflectivity. But longevity in high-stress areas? Good luck with that. DDS Lab?s Z-Crown Layered Zirconia restoration offers the best of both options: a clinical-grade zirconia core with a porcelain overlay. At 1200 MPa, Z-Crown?s flexural strength is comparable to that of traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations while maintaining a natural and vibrant translucency. The product is 100% metal-free, a feature that can prevent gingival darkening and remove the possibility of exposing metallic margins if gum recession begins. The product is naturally esthetic, transmits the color of adjacent teeth, and can be matched to any shade.

Zirconia Deep Dive

Used in dentistry for over a decade, clinical-grade zirconia is an increasingly attractive restorative option in light of the ever-rising cost of noble alloys. Specifically, the core of the Z-Crown Layered Zirconia restoration is yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP), a monophasic zirconia oxide. Y-TZP is formed by sintering crystals directly together without interference, preserving the material?s inherent beneficial properties and stabilizing the overall structure. (All zirconia materials are not the same; differences exist in overall flexural strength and cosmetic capabilities.) Indications DDS Lab offers the Z-Crown Layered Zirconia option for anterior and posterior full-coverage single crowns, bridges spanning up to 48 mm, and inlay or wing-type bridges with up to a 2-pontic span. Contraindicated for bruxers, a Z-Crown Layered crown and bridge can be cemented conventionally with resin ionomer materials. Z-Crown is easily adjustable at chairside, if necessary, with a green stone or a diamond bur.

Features and Benefits

With copings fabricated using CAD/ CAM technology (from a choice of white and shaded blanks), the Z-Crown Layered Zirconia crown and bridge offers a number of vital benefits for the patient and dentist. Because it is biocompatible, patients exhibit a healthy tissue response. It exhibits a low CTE and high fracture toughness, and it can provide long-term reliability. The non-feldspathic layering porcelain resists wear and impart natural opalescence and translucency.

A Solid Alternative

DDS Lab also provides Z-Crown Solid, a monolithic pure zirconia (Y-TZP) restoration that requires minimal clearance and can stand up to a severe bruxer. It is indicated for posterior single-crowns, bridges up to 35 mm long, and implant restorations. Z-Crown Solid crowns and bridges accommodate the simple and conservative preparation design similar to that used with cast gold. When properly glazed and polished, the Z-Crown Solid restoration is kind to opposing dentition and resist plaque accumulation.

DDS Lab technicians whose expertise aided the research and introduction of the Z-Crown products in the United States continue to actively participate in the fabrication of Z-Crown Layered and Z-Crown Solid restorations. Their intimate familiarity with the Z-Crown technology, materials, and processes enable these specialized technicians to create crowns and bridges with laser precision and esthetic luminescence.
