I have had the opportunity recently to evaluate a revolutionary caries detection device, SOPROLIFE from ACTEON. Like the Midwest Caries I.D. from DENTSPLY Professional and the KaVo DIAGNOdent, the SOPROLIFE system relies on fluorescence of demineralized tooth structure to determine areas of concern. However, it is important to point out that the presence of fluorescence does not quantify the amount of decalcification and cannot be relied on to “show you what to do.”
One unique feature of SOPROLIFE is its ability to also act as an intraoral camera to both record the areas of fluorescence as well as its ability to take intraoral and extraoral photographs. This feature is especially useful in documentation. If you are not currently using either caries detection dyes or a light fluorescence device, SOPROLIFE is well worth looking into.
