Ultradent’s Flor-Opal Varnish White is a fluoride varnish with an innovative syringe and tip delivery system for fast, simple, and mess-free application. This flavored, xylitol-sweetened 5% sodium fluoride in a resin carrier is delivered in a .5 mL syringe-to-syringe mixing system. The system comes complete with Ultradent’s SoftEZ tip for a paintbrush-like application that applies an even coat of varnish from start to finish.

A mix of 14 dentist and hygienist evaluators with a combined 298 years of experience participated in Dental Product Shopper’s evaluation of Flor-Opal Varnish White. Evaluators rated several features, including ease of use, mess-free delivery, speed and convenience, and delivery time.

Ease of Use and Mess-Free Delivery

According to Ultradent, Flor-Opal Varnish White’s syringe and tip delivery system provide fast and mess-free application. The innovative syringe allows users to apply Flor-Opal Varnish White in 1 quick motion, without repeatedly returning the brush to a fluoride well.

When the evaluators were asked about Flor- Opal Varnish White’s ease of use, 6 rated is as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, 2 rated it as good, 1 rated it as fair, and 1 rated it as poor. One evaluator with 35 years in private practice said, “This fluoride varnish is the easiest I have used since varnish has been distributed. It flows on fast and covers the teeth very well.” A hygienist evaluator from North Dakota added, “What an easy delivery system.”

The manufacturer states that Flor-Opal Varnish White features a unique syringe-to-syringe mixing system that ensures a consistent, even dose of fluoride is applied to each tooth. Unlike traditional fluoride varnishes that use a well and brush system, Flor-Opal’s mixing process between syringes ensures a consistent application of fluoride with less mess and product waste.

Eleven evaluators rated Flor-Opal Varnish White’s mess-free delivery; 8 rated it as excellent, 1 as very good, 2 as good, and 3 as fair. One dentist evaluator from New Jersey stated that Flor- Opal’s “application is easy; no mess,” while a hygienist evaluator with 5 years of private practice experience added, “I loved the syringe and how there was no need to re-dip a brush over and over again into the varnish.”

One evaluator who rated the mixing system and mess-free delivery as fair said, “my preference would be to just pull the cover off and mix with the delivery brush.”

Speed, Convenience, and Delivery Time

Flor-Opal Varnish White is delivered with Ultradent’s SoftEZ tip, a tip with a unibody design that avoids fiber shedding and tip clogging, according to Ultradent. The bristles are integrated within the body of the tip providing a platform for an even coat of varnish. The tip is also flexible, facilitating reach to difficult-toaccess areas.

When the evaluators were asked to rate Flor-Opal Varnish White on its delivery time, 8 evaluators rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, 2 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as fair. When asked about the importance of delivery time when purchasing varnishes, 100% of the evaluators said that delivery time was very important or important. An Illinois hygienist with 30 years experience in private practice said, “I originally thought the delivery would be time consuming, but it wasn’t. Great product!” Another evaluator said, “The application tip works very well and helps get the varnish interproximal better than most brush tips.”
