DENTSPLY Professional describes the Midwest Stylus ATC air-driven handpiece as a breakthrough in cutting technology. According to the manufacturer, Midwest engineers created a high-speed air-driven handpiece that combines power and efficiency with effortless cutting.

Eight current users of the Midwest Stylus ATC handpiece agreed to participate in this Dental Product Shopper evaluation. They rated and commented on many of the handpiece’s features, including cutting efficiency, size and balance of the handpiece, ergonomics, and visibility within the oral cavity.

Cutting Efficiency

Under load, the Midwest Stylus ATC maintains constant speed. To achieve this cutting efficiency, Midwest engineers added a sensor to the handpiece that connects to an electronic “brain” in the control source. This speed-sensing intelligence (SSI) constantly maintains bur speed according to load and knows when to deliver more power.

When asked about the importance of cutting efficiency when considering the purchase of a handpiece, all 8 evaluators said this feature is very important. The evaluators were then asked to rate the cutting efficiency of the Midwest Stylus ATC. Four evaluators rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. Four evaluators named cutting efficiency as their favorite feature.

One evaluator said, “The cutting efficiency is to the same level as an electric handpiece without the heat generation.” This same evaluator said he would definitely recommend the Midwest Stylus ATC to colleagues.

Size, Balance, and Ergonomics

DENTSPLY Professional describes the Midwest Stylus ATC as lightweight and ergonomic for all-day comfort.

When asked to rate the size and balance of the Midwest Stylus ATC handpiece, 3 evaluators rated it as excellent and 5 rated it as very good. With regard to ergonomics of the handpiece, 6 dentists rated it as excellent and 2 rated it as very good.

An evaluator with 28 years of experience described the Midwest Stylus ATC as “not as heavy or bulky as electric, but cuts like an electric.” Another evaluator said, “It is comfortable to handle and cuts well.”

Visibility and Maneuverability

According to the manufacturer, many aspects of the Midwest Stylus ATC design enhance visibility and maneuverability within the oral cavity. The short shank provides enhanced access to posterior surfaces and the rotational capabilities of the swivel head allow the clinician freedom of movement. Finally, the mini and medium heads available with the Midwest Stylus ATC enable increased visibility, access, and maneuverability.

When asked to rate the maneuverability and visibility they experience within the oral cavity when using the Midwest Stylus ATC, 3 evaluators rated the handpiece as excellent and 5 rated it as very good. One of the evaluators noted the smaller size of the handpiece as one of his favorite features. He then went on to say, “I love the fiberoptic light.”

Overall Satisfaction

All of the evaluators said that the Midwest Stylus ATC is much or somewhat better than similar handpieces. All of the evaluators said they would definitely or probably purchase the handpiece in the future.

When asked to rate their overall satisfaction with the handpiece, 4 evaluators rated it as excellent and 4 rated it as very good.

An evaluator from Tennessee said, “I have used this handpiece for several years. It has been very dependable and is very effective.” Another dentist summed up his evaluation by saying, “[The handpiece] cuts smoothly without effort.”

Although not specifically asked about the customer service they have received with their Midwest Stylus ATC, several evaluators commented on the positive experience they have had since purchasing their handpiece. For example, one evaluator said, “Like any product, the customer service is what differentiates a company. My DENTSPLY representative was very well educated about the product and everything he communicated was true.” Another evaluator simply said, “I like my salesperson. He has been very helpful.”
