S-Diamonds

Retail Price : $7.95/30-50 pieces

  Recommended

The use of S-Diamonds™ is highly recommended for increased efficiency and gentle treatment.  The combination of a structured blank and coarse grit allows quick and effective substance removal and improved cooling.  The faceted structure of the blank reduces clogging and the generation of heat.

The preparation of crown cores is often very time consuming. S-Diamonds are recommended for greater efficiency and more gentle treatment.

Product Review

Komet USA S-Diamonds are designed for fast reduction of tooth structure, allowing speedier primary preparation of crown cores and cavity preparation. According to Komet USA, the company’s S-Diamonds can meet this goal through a combination of structured blank and coarse grit and a faceted blank structure that reduces clogging and heat generation. In an inhouse comparison of conventional diamond instruments and S-Diamonds, Komet found that the SDiamonds show higher material reduction when used with structured instruments.

Evaluations
All 4 of the dentists who evaluated the Komet USA S-Diamonds use diamond burs in their practices at least once a week, and they have been using their current burs for more than 3 years. All 4 of the evaluators gave Komet USA S-Diamonds high ratings on ease of use, packaging, and chip removal. One dentist commented that the burs provided “smooth cutting” and “no clogging.” Three of the 4 evaluators rated chip removal as excellent or very good; however, the fourth dentist rated chip removal below average.

How the S-Diamonds Stack Up Against Their Competitors
In an overall comparison of Komet USA S-Diamonds with similar diamond burs currently being used by the evaluators, 3 of the 4 dentists rated the Komet USA S-Diamonds as better (one rated them as similar). Three of the dentist evaluators said that they would definitely or probably purchase the SDiamonds in the future and would recommend them to colleagues.
The cost of the Komet USA SDiamond was rated as somewhat higher than other similar products.

Grinding Power
A study published in 2007 in The Journal of Applied Research examined the grinding power of 3 grinding tools.1 The authors observed a significant variation in the grinding time required by the 3 instruments studied. During the first cycle, one instrument began with an average grinding speed of 80.8 mm/min and the other with a speed of 91.3 mm/min. Komet, however started the first cycle at 121.6 mm/min. Even with a slight decrease after the first cycle, the grinding power of the Komet USA SDiamond remained superior to the other 2 instruments, even after the tenth cycle.
The results of the study found that average grinding power of Komet’s SDiamonds surpassed that of the other 2 instruments. The authors concluded that the S-Diamonds owed their superior power to their structured blank.

Bur Design
Seventeen bur configurations are available for crown preparation and 3 bur configurations for cavity preparation. Komet’s S-Diamonds are available in coarse (151 μm) and super-coarse (181 μm) grit sizes.
When preparing crown cores, Komet recommends using the red contra- angle at a speed of 160,000 rpm and to use sufficient spray cooling (at least 50 mL/min). The manufacturer also recommends, because of the instruments high cutting ability, applying only low contact pressure—no more than 2 N.
