Patterson Dental Carbide Burs

Carbide burs are the most common type of dental bur and are used to remove material and tooth structure. Carbide burs leave a smoother surface compared to diamond burs and can be sharpened and reused. They may also have a coating that increases tool life. Carbide burs come in a variety of shapes and sizes and may have specialized applications.

When using carbide burs during surgeries, Dr. Edward Penza is often disappointed when a carbide’s cutting edge becomes dull in the middle of a procedure. And it’s especially frustrating—and potentially dangerous—when a carbide bur fractures during a procedure. Always on the lookout for dental products that enrich his dentistry, Dr. Penza recently tried Patterson Dental’s carbide surgical burs and was delighted to discover that the carbide’s “cutting edge is far superior and lasts much longer than other brands.”

Similarly, Dr. Craig Aebli said he needs a “reliable surgical carbide bur,” and after using the Patterson carbides, he was pleased that the burs “did not break during use and cut efficiently.” Available in several shapes, sizes, lengths, and grits, Patterson’s carbide surgical burs are rotary cutting instruments that are ideal for extractions, root canals, and other surgical procedures.

Efficiency & Speed of Substrate Removal

Like many of his colleagues, Dr. David Martin requires an “efficient cutting bur that is stable and quick,” especially during surgical procedures. Impressed with “how cleanly Patterson’s carbide surgical burs cut,” Dr. Martin said they cut very well and did not rattle, especially when he used them as single-use burs. “The burs function well and do what they are designed to do,” agreed Dr. Marc Gottlieb.

Dr. Aebli thought the carbides “improved the efficiency of surgical procedures,” and Dr. Dory Stutman called them “very sharp, very smooth, and efficiently able to section through molars during surgical extractions.” Explaining how the 1557 surgical bur was especially beneficial during surgery, Dr. Stutman said he could use the carbide at slower RPMs with a low-speed handpiece using the air water spray, which “made my surgery safer with less aerosol.” When asked if he would recommend the Patterson carbides to other dental professionals, Dr. Jerry Rampton said, “Yes, because if they are priced well, colleagues can have both quality and savings.”

Longevity, Durability, Control

When asked if he would recommend the Patterson carbides to colleagues, Dr. Gary Dong said they have all the good characteristics of a surgical bur and called them “good burs that seem durable and make nice clean cuts with little to no vibrations.” He also discovered that the carbides are “very good for sectioning molar teeth and troughing to get retained roots out.” Although he usually doesn’t like reusing burs, Dr. Martin found the Patterson carbides to be durable “with no broken burs or wearing out too quickly,” and said the procedures all went smoothly, whether he was using the carbides during surgery or for successfully cutting through crowns.

Dr. Hilary Dalton said the burs “allowed a more precision approach” and were particularly helpful with “existing RCT molar extractions.” In a specific case, Dr. Rampton “used RA #4 & #6 (latch) primarily for endo initial access to the canals” and said they “worked very well!”

Impressed with the Patterson carbides from his very first case, Dr. Penza said the burs stay sharp and cut as well on the third tooth as on the first. He explained, “I had a patient present with 3 teeth that had very large multi-surface composites. I removed the composites and underlying caries rather effortlessly due to the cutting efficiency and the strength of the 1557 Patterson carbide I was using.”

Sizes, Shapes, Grits, Lack of Chatter

Hoping to find “smooth and efficient burs with lots of shape and size options,” Dr. Amir Noori Esfandiari said Patterson offers a “good variation of surgical bur options with many sizes so I can confidently perform the surgery.” Describing the Friction Grip (FG) 702 carbide, Dr. Noori E. said, “These solid carbide burs have a smooth and superior cutting efficiency to help separate the crown and roots without excessive chipping effect.” When he needed a narrow surgical bur, he relied on the FG 701 carbide to “ensure a complete separation without damaging the narrow root tips and surrounding precious structures.” Dr. Dong agreed that “the different size burs are great for various extractions” and said they “allowed good access to various areas with little to no vibrations.” He also mentioned that using the carbides saved him time and provided good visibility. Dr. Dilip Dudhat praised the “wonderful designs and options” and said the carbides are offered at a good price.

Overall Satisfaction

“I’m happy with the performance of these burs and will likely buy them again,” said Dr. Aebli. “My first thought when asked to evaluate these carbides was to think that carbide burs are pretty much all the same, but after using these carbides on various cases I can say that there is clearly a difference,” Dr. Penza commented. After completing this evaluation, he is confident that Patterson Dental’s surgical carbide burs are an “excellent product that I fully endorse” and concluded, “These are the best carbides I have used in this decade.”
