Diatech’s diamond burs are multilayered to allow for repeated use.
Diatech, based in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, is known for its Swiss-made, multilayered gold diamond burs. At the 2007 American Dental Association Annual Session in San Francisco, Diatech introduced its Top 25 Diamond Kit. This kit features Diatech’s top 25 most requested diamond burs.
Nine dentists participated in this Dental Product Shopper evaluation of Diatech’s Top 25 Diamond Kit. They were asked to evaluate the kit on such items as ease of use, chatter/vibration, speed, cutting efficiency and consistency, and durability.
Ease of Use
When asked about the importance of ease of use when purchasing diamond burs, 4 evaluators said it is very important, 3 said it is important, and 2 were neutral. When these same evaluators were asked to rate the Diatech Top 25 Diamond Kit on ease of use, 5 rated it as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as fair. One evaluator described the burs as having “good control in cutting preps.” Another evaluator said the burs “worked well.”
Chatter/Vibration and Speed
The Diatech diamond burs are made in Switzerland from natural diamond dust, which according to the manufacturer, provides for a faster and smoother cut. The evaluators were asked to rate the Diatech Top 25 Diamond Kit on chatter/ vibration and speed. With regard to chatter/vibration, 5 evaluators rated the kit as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. One evaluator described the burs as “extremely smooth cutting [with] minimal chatter.” Another commented that he experienced “little or no vibration” and that he felt he had “good control when using the burs.” When asked to rate the speed of the Diatech Top 25 Diamond Kit, 4 evaluators rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. One evaluator commented that “at times [they] seemed a little slower than I’m used to using.” Another evaluator said that he experienced “excellent speed.” A third evaluator described the speed as “excellent in my use.”
Cutting Efficiency and Consistency
The 9 dentists who participated in this evaluation of the Diatech Top 25 Diamond Kit were asked to rate the burs on cutting efficiency and consistency. For both cutting efficiency and consistency, 5 evaluators rated the burs as excellent, 3 rated them as very good, and 1 rated them as good. One evaluator described the cutting efficiency as “very good.”
Durability
According to the manufacturer, the burs included in the Diatech Top 25 Diamond Kit are multilayered so that they can be used repeatedly. In addition, the gold used in the burs helps to prevent corrosion when they are autoclaved. When asked about the durability of the Diatech burs included in the Top 25 Diamond Kit, 3 evaluators rated the burs as excellent, 5 rated them as very good, and 1 rated them as fair. One evaluator said that he “used them several times and they’re still good.”
Overall Satisfaction
When the evaluators were asked if they would recommend the Diatech Top 25 Diamond Kit to their colleagues, 8 said definitely or probably. At the end of the evaluation, the evaluators were asked to give their overall satisfaction rating for the Diatech burs they used in their practices for this Dental Product Shopper evaluation. Two evaluators rated the burs as excellent, 5 rated them as very good, and 2 rated them as good. One evaluator commented that they are “good diamonds, and I will purchase them in the future.”
