CLING2 is a zinc-oxide noneugenol, automix temporary cement with a unique polycarboxylate resin in a paste-paste format.

When choosing a temporary cement, it’s critical to ensure it meets the following characteristics: easy removal of excess from around the margins; good marginal seal to help minimize sensitivity; good retention but easy removal of the temporary prosthesis; low solubility in oral fl uids; and compatibility with provisional resin restorations, resin core materials, bonding agents, and permanent cements.

CLING2, from Clinician’s Choice, is a noneugenol, automix temporary cement with a unique polycarboxylate resin in a paste-paste format. According to the manufacturer, the addition of polycarboxylate optimizes adhesion, soothes the tooth, and provides an excellent seal, while allowing the material to be easily removed from the tooth preparations when desired. Clinician’s Choice describes CLING2 as versatile and easy to use.

Fourteen evaluators with a combined 357 years of experience participated in Dental Product Shopper’s evaluation of CLING2. Evaluators rated several features, including handling, dispensing, ease of removing excess cement, marginal seal, and overall satisfaction with the product.

Handling/Dispensing

CLING2 is available in a paste-paste, automix formulation for direct application into provisional crowns, bridges, inlays, or onlays. It mixes automatically to provide a bubble-free, 1:1 base:catalyst mixture. According to Clinician’s Choice, because CLING2 is eugenol-free, it won’t impede on the set times of the adhesive, the impression material, or final cement.

CLING2’s handling/dispensing was well received by the evaluators—7 rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, and 3 rated it as good. An evaluator from Dublin, FL, said, “The low viscosity made it very easy to seat a provisional.”

Another evaluator with 28 years of experience agreed: “The mixing tips are great and make for easy delivery of the material to the temp and ease in clean up.” In addition, 6 evaluators named handling the feature they liked best about the product.

Ease of Removing Excess Cement

While the small amount of polycarboxylate resin in CLING2 optimizes adhesion, it still allows the material to be easily removed from the tooth preparations when required.

When the 14 evaluators were asked to rate ease of removal of excess cement, 8 rated it excellent and 3 rated it very good, 1 rated it as good, 1 rated it as fair, and 1 rated it as poor. One dentist who has been in practice for 4 years said CLING2 was “very easy to use, the ease of cleaning excess at margins was excellent.” When asked if she would recommend CLING2 to colleagues or contacts within the dental profession, this evaluator answered “definitely.”

Marginal Seal

According to the manufacturer, CLING2’s adhesion to tooth and provisional materials provides an excellent marginal seal.

When asked to rate marginal seal, 6 evaluators rated CLING2 as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, 4 rated it as good, and 1 rated it as fair. When asked what he liked most about the product, a clinician from Hilliard, OH, said he liked “the seal around the temporary and reduced sensitivity while the temp was worn by our patient compared to my normal temporary cement.” When asked what he would like to see improved about the product, he responded, “Nothing really.” This same evaluator went on to say he would “defi nitely” purchase CLING2 in the future.

Overall Satisfaction

When the evaluators were asked if they would recommend CLING2 to their colleagues, 9 said defi nitely or probably. Nine of the 14 evaluators said they defi nitely or probably would purchase CLING2 in the future.

Evaluators were asked to rate their overall satisfaction with CLING2. Five evaluators rated it as excellent, 4 rated it as very good, 1 rated it as good, 3 rated it as fair, and 1 rated it as poor. An evaluator with 13 years of experience summarized his evaluation of CLING2 by saying, “The product came off fairly easy when needed to.” Another evaluator added that he liked the “quick set and easy clean up of preps.”
