Ten dentists participated in a Dental Product Shopper evaluation of Hu-Friedy's Stainless Steel Primary Molar Crowns. They rated and commented on such features as ease of placement, occlusal thickness, layout of the kit, and overall satisfaction.
Ease of Placement and Adaptability
Hu-Friedy's Stainless Steel Primary Molar Crowns are pretrimmed and crimped to aid in quick and simple placement. However, if trimming and crimping are necessary, the crowns have soft and adaptable gingival margins and lateral areas to make that easy.
When asked to rate ease of placement of the crowns, 3 evaluators rated them as excellent and 7 rated them as very good. With regard to ease of crimping and trimming, 4 evaluators rated this feature as excellent, 5 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good.
The evaluators were also asked to rate the adaptability of the crowns to the gingival margin. Four evaluators rated adaptability as excellent and 6 rated it as very good.
Several evaluators noted adaptability as a favorite feature of the crowns. A pediatric dentist from Somerville, NJ who has been in practice for 36 years said that "anatomical detail and ease of adapting to the tooth" are his favorite features. This same evaluator said he would definitely purchase the crowns in the future and recommend them to colleagues.
Occlusal Thickness
Hu-Friedy describes its Stainless Steel Primary Crowns as having ideal occlusal thickness to resist abrasion and perforation. When the evaluators were asked to rate the occlusal thickness of the crowns, 6 rated it as excellent and 4 rated it as very good.
An evaluator from Scottsdale, AZ who has been in practice for 30 years said, "We liked them so much we ordered them for the office to see how they wear for our patients. We have a bunch of grinders and sometimes those children bite through the crowns. So far we are very pleased."
Kit Layout
The layout and packaging of the Hu- Friedy Stainless Steel Primary Crown kit was well liked by all of the evaluators. Seven rated the kit layout as excellent and 3 rated it as very good.
An evaluator from Red Bank, NJ, said his favorite feature is the "locking top on the kit." He went on to say, "My staff call them the 'crowns in the nice box'." An evaluator from Enid, OK, said, "The layout of the kit [makes it] very clear and easy to find the appropriate size crown that you need." This same evaluator rated his overall satisfaction with the kit as excellent.
Overall Satisfaction
Nine evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend Hu- Friedy Stainless Steel Primary Crowns to their colleagues; 8 evaluators said they would definitely or probably purchase them in the future.
When asked what they would like to see improved about the product, 6 of the 10 evaluators said "nothing." Two evaluators noted that they would like to see tooth-colored stainless steel crowns. Another evaluator said he would like to see "options for pre-crimped and noncrimped" crowns.
At the end of the evaluation, the evaluators were asked to give their overall satisfaction rating for Hu-Friedy Stainless Steel Crowns. Three evaluators rated them as excellent, 6 rated them as very good, and 1 rated them as good. One evaluator summed up his evaluation by saying, "Like the crowns, love the box. No more spills."
