ScanX Classic PSP technology delivers ease of use, patient comfort, and high-quality images.
Fast,” “Easy to use,” “Great for case presentation.” These are some of the comments Dental Product Shopper received from the 12 evaluators who recently evaluated Air Techniques’ ScanX Classic digital imaging system.
ScanX Classic, 1 of 4 devices in the ScanX family of phosphor storage plate (PSP) imaging systems, accepts a variety of intraoral sizes (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) and can read images from 4 PSPs at the same time. In addition, ScanX Classic can read extraoral panoramic, cephalometric, and transmandibular joint PSPs.
The 13 clinicians who took part in this evaluation (dentists, dental assistants, and educators) all had previous experience with the ScanX Classic, so they were able to offer valuable insight into its use.
Overall Image Quality and Diagnostic Ability
Manufacturer Description: ScanX PSPs provide superior detail and clarity, leading to a higher level of diagnostic ability. The level of detail and clarity achieved by ScanX PSPs is superior to that of x-ray film and other PSP systems. The PSPs capture 17% to 38% more image area and help to ensure clinicians don’t miss important structures.
Evaluator Feedback: When asked why ScanX Classichas been an invaluable addition to his practice, Dr. Daniel Springer, who has a practice in Ephrata, PA, said, “[It’s a] better diagnostic tool than regular film plates.” Dr. Springer rated image quality and diagnostic ability of the device as very good and said he would definitely recommend the ScanX Classic to his colleagues. Nikki Rubaine, a dentist from Tortola, British Virgin Islands, noted, “ScanX has improved the way I read radiographs and the way I present cases to patients.”
Overall Ease of Use
Manufacturer Description: ScanX Classic integrates easily into any dental practice. Installation is simple and it works with existing x-ray systems. It has a workflow similar to film, so the learning curve is relatively flat and will create little disruption to the practice.
Evaluator Feedback: When asked what they like best about ScanX Classic, the evaluators commented, “Zero learning curve,” “Easy integration with practice management software,” and “Able to place phosphor plates just like intraoral film.” Dr. David Larson, who has been in practice for 27 years and rated overall ease of use of ScanX Classic as excellent, said this when asked what he likes best about the device: “[It] can be used in multiple areas at the same time. [There is] no fear of sensors breaking, and no new technique to learn for the staff.”
Patient Experience
Manufacturer Description: ScanX PSPs, which are durable and reusable, are 30 times thinner than wired sensors, and they have rounded edges for patient comfort. The thinness and flexibility of the PSPs make them ideal for pediatric patients and those who have small mouths or cannot open widely. In addition, the ability for patients to view the images on a computer monitor means they can participate more actively in their care.
Evaluator Feedback: Dr. Robert Martin, from Palm Desert, CA, described the ScanX Classic PSPs as “the only way to go for pediatric patients because the phosphor plates are flexible and tolerated much better than a rigid sensor.” He and several other evaluators also commented on the benefit ScanX Classic offers in terms of patient education and case presentation. Some comments were: “Great for case presentation,” “Visual for our patients,” and “Allows us to display image on large screen.”
Overall Satisfaction
Dental Product Shopper asked all of the evaluators to name 3 reasons why ScanX Classic has been an invaluable addition to their practices. Some of their comments included: “Office appears high-tech, faster processing of x-rays, and no chemicals to purchase and dispose of”; “Lower exposure to patients, ease of transition for staff, concurrent multiuse”; and “ease of use, patient tolerance, and integration into computer software.”
The evaluators were also asked to share any interesting experiences they’ve had with ScanX Classic. Dr. Beth Brody, who rated her overall satisfaction as very good said, “My husband and I share the office, so it is used by a dentist and a podiatrist.”
Dr. Dean Glasser, a dentist from New York, said he would definitely purchase the ScanX Classic in the future and would definitely recommend it to colleagues. He summed up his evaluation, saying, “Exceptional product…it’s faster, easier, and better than virtually all scanners I have tested.”
