Dentsply SureFil SDR flow

DENTSPLY Caulk SureFil SDR flow

Low-Stress, Bulk-Fill Flowable Composite

SureFil SDR flow combines the benefits of a flowable composite with first-ever low-stress, bulk-fill capabilities.

DENTSPLY Caulk's new SureFil SDR flow is the first-ever bulk-fill flowable base, enabling placement of posterior composites in 40% less time.

The chemical structure of the “breakthrough” stress-decreasing resin (SDR) technology controls and optimizes matrix formation through every phase of curing. Polymerization stress is reduced by up to 60% without sacrificing 20-second cure time. This, in turn, enables bulk filling (up to 4 mm) and curing for faster and easier restorations. SureFil SDR flow can be placed up to the dentin enamel junction or in 4-mm increments, eliminating the need for incremental layering. It is chemically compatible with methacrylate based universal composites as a capping agent to provide the desired esthetics and wear resistance for occlusal surfaces. SureFil SDR flow is formulated to streamline restoration procedures with self-leveling handling and bulk filling/ curing. DENTSPLY Caulk SureFil SDR flow

Low-Stress, Bulk-Fill Flowable Composite

SureFil SDR flow combines the benefits of a flowable composite with first-ever low-stress, bulk-fill capabilities.

DENTSPLY Caulk’s new SureFil SDR flow is the first-ever bulk-fill flowable base, enabling placement of posterior composites in 40% less time.

According to the manufacturer, the chemical structure of the “breakthrough” stress-decreasing resin (SDR) technology controls and optimizes matrix formation through every phase of curing. Polymerization stress is reduced by up to 60%1 without sacrificing 20-second cure time. This, in turn, enables bulk filling (up to 4 mm) and curing for faster and easier restorations.

SureFil SDR flow can be placed up to the dentin enamel junction or in 4-mm increments, eliminating the need for incremental layering. It is also chemically compatible with methacrylate based universal composites as a capping agent to provide the desired esthetics and wear resistance for occlusal surfaces.

Ease of Use

According to the manufacturer, SureFil SDR flow is formulated for optimal flow and consistency. Self-leveling handling eliminates the need to manipulate the material with an instrument and provides excellent cavity adaptation.

Eight of the 10 dentists who evaluated SureFil SDR flow rated ease/simplicity of use as excellent and 2 rated it as very good. When asked about overall handling, 6 evaluators rated it as excellent and 4 rated it as very good. The evaluator who reported “good consistency and flowability…easy to place” also said it was “a little sticky at times, but stays where you put it so this wasn’t a problem.” Another evaluator called it “great stuff.”

DENTSPLY notes that SureFil SDR flow’s pre-measured Compula tip allows the clinician to simply dispense and cure, saving up to 40% in placement time. The delivery system was rated as excellent by 8 evaluators and as good by 1. One dentist “liked the tip,” another said “unidose—it’s about time,” and another “loved the gun even though it came apart the first time I used it. The top piece that clips into a small metal bar repeatedly separated.” One dentist found the delivery gun “much easier to handle than a typical flowable syringe” and another reported “no problems, even though I’d prefer dispensing from small syringes rather than a...syringe.”

Cavity Adaptation and Contact Creation

Internal cavity adaptation was rated as excellent by 7 evaluators and as very good to good by 3. One evaluator called it “slightly more viscous than my current brand,” another said it “adapts well with an explorer or probe to the proximal box of cavity preps,” and a third called it “fantastic.” One dentist was “concerned about potential voids” and another called it “great for lining the proximal box in class II…absolutely no voids.”

Nine evaluators rated SureFil SDR flow for contact creation; 2 as excellent, 4 as very good, and 3 as good. One dentist “couldn’t make the whole contact with it (it’s not as strong), but it was perfect for the first 2-3 mm of the proximal box.” The evaluator who was “a little wary of having 2 different materials creating the contact” reported “no [contact] problems.”

Procedure Time

SureFil SDR flow is formulated to streamline restoration procedures with self-leveling handling and bulk filling/ curing, saving up to 40% in placement time. Six evaluators rated procedure time as excellent, 3 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as good. One evaluator said it “cures solidly and quickly without having to create several layers, saving placement and curing time.”

Overall Satisfaction

Seven evaluators said they would definitely purchase SureFil SDR flow and recommend it to colleagues and 2 said they probably would. Overall satisfaction was rated as excellent by 4 evaluators, as very good by 5, and as good by 1.
