With its dual-curing properties, Fill-Up! guarantees reliable curing of a restoration of any thickness.
Conventional light-curing bulk-fill materials are limited in their curing depth, often causing a clinician to question whether the restoration is fully cured. Dr. Jacob Scheiner told Dental Product Shopper it is sometimes hard to be confident that deep composite fillings are fully cured. With its dual-curing properties, Fill-Up! Bulk Composite eliminates that doubt and guarantees a thorough cure. “It is definitely reliable to cure in deep cavities,” Scheiner said.
Because it doesn’t require the layering technique and because of its unique properties and delivery system, Fill-Up! can be applied quickly and efficiently, saving both time and cost. “Since it is a dual-cure composite, it can be done in one step, and since it is very flowable, it was very easy to use,” Dr. Milton Ruiz reported. “It was very easy to place in large restorations due to good flow and the delivery system. It made it a lot easier in hard-to-reach posterior areas,” Ruiz added. He said Fill-Up! allows him to complete his fillings faster, resulting in a more cost-effective way to handle large restorations.
Scheiner and Ruiz were among a team of general dentists who recently evaluated COLTENE’s Fill-Up! Bulk Composite. The material combines the advantages of resin-based composites with simple, timesaving handling and is applied in one step, making Fill-Up! fast and economical to use.
Dispensing and Handling
Fill-Up! is a radiopaque, flowable composite material with antibacterial zinc oxide and is used for bulk-filling therapy in the posterior region. It is applied in one single layer of any depth, using an automix syringe, and has a working time of 1 minute and a setting time of 2 minutes. Fill-Up! is indicated for Class I and Class II fillings, cavity linings, and core build-ups, and is perfect for cases that require a fast, esthetic, tooth-colored restoration.
“I like how this material dispenses,” said Dr. Jon Lundquist, adding, “[It] handles well as you let it flow into prep.” Dr. Lundquist was looking for a bulk-fill composite that was easy to use and, after trying Fill-Up!, he found that it was easy to use and speeds up procedures. “I have some very antsy patients, and speed of use is critical sometimes in making patients comfortable.” Dr. Fauzia Khan, who liked the mixing and dispensing properties best, revealed that the single-step fill allows for faster and more economical procedures.
Baltimore dentist Paul Yi noted that the filling material was easy to dispense because of its medium consistency. “It gave a very positive chairside experience as the manipulation of the material was very easy,” Dr. Yi shared. When asked what he liked best about Fill-Up!, Dr. Eric Leibowitz simply replied, “Just fill and done.” He added, “[It] saves time, which saves money and offers more for patients.” Dr. Leibowitz concluded that using Fill-Up! makes white fillings much more pleasurable to complete.
Dual-Cure Polymerization
COLTENE guarantees that Fill-Up! will fully cure, even with very deep cavities, without the need for the layering technique or a top layer. “I feel pretty confident to use this as the final filling layer without the need to veneer resin on top of it,” shared Dr. Josephine Leung, a Canadian dentist. “It saves time for large restorations [because there is] no need to do layering,” she continued.
No matter what layer thickness is applied, the dual light- and chemically-curing properties of Fill-Up! ensure full, deep, uniform curing. Dr. Leung liked that the dual-curing properties ensured full curing where light can’t penetrate, and Dr. Elizabeth Spindel said the “cure is deep and not light dependent.”
When using Fill-Up! during the 4-week evaluation period, Dr. Scheiner noted that it saved time for him and his patient, which satisfies the patient while freeing up chair time. Dr. George Dimitri, who rated the dual-cure polymerization process as excellent, concluded, “[The] dual-cure allowed for placement in areas that were limited with light-cure.”
Shade Selection, Finishing/ Polishing
Available in a universal shade with excellent self-blending properties, Fill-Up! composite can be finished with rotary instruments and easily polished to a high gloss. “[It] looks great and polishes nice,” shared Dr. Lundquist, who added, “[It’s] very easy to use and has a chameleon look.”
Two of the evaluating dentists recommended additional shade options. Dr. Leung said using this material has increased her treatment acceptance because she can offer an alternative treatment option to a patient who can’t afford a crown right away.
Overall Satisfaction
Most of the evaluators said they would purchase the Fill-Up! Bulk Composite in the future and recommend it to colleagues. Dr. Yi, who rated his overall satisfaction as very good, said the material eliminated in-consistency in composite restoration. And Dr. Lundquist summed up his experiences with the product by saying, “When I need a bulk-fi ll for a restoration, I know I can depend on Fill-Up!
